The backwards Tuggeranong Parkway speed camera

Here is my community service notice for those who haven’t learnt where the brakes are in your car. The fixed speed camera on the Tuggeranong Parkway southbound at the Hindmarsh Dr overpass now seems to be pointing the opposite direction to which it was originally installed and has been for the last week or so. Whether it is a deliberate change by those in charge within the Government to help top up Katy’s budget, if it’s broken or someone else has been fiddling with it, I do not know. But the camera now appears to be facing north taking pictures of cars as they come towards it, if you’re one of the many great drivers on the road who like to speed towards the camera doing 130kph and jamming on the breaks to go to 90kph 1 metre before the camera you may wish to think again, or keep doing it as it will make my day when you get a ticket.

* Brakes…. You take a Break, from using the Brakes in your car…

Or more precisely; ‘for those who are such poor drivers they can’t maintain the speed limit’. Simple method for avoiding fines from speed cameras. Don’t speed.

Why would you slow down at the camera? That’s stupid (and not a little bit annoying). The speed limit doesn’t change, so why should your speed?

Obviously you two havent driven down the parkway at 100 much? If you drive at the same rate as the flow of traffic around you (for safety reasons, a smaller speed differential is safest to avoid being annoying as you point out), you’ll generally find yourself sitting on 105-110. This is perfectly safe until the signed limit is enforced, then everyone drops from their steady speed of 105 down to 90 (is your speedo accurate? is our equipment? can you afford to bet a couple of hundred bucks on it?).

Maybe it’s been changed to a point-to-point camera. Pretty sure the Tuggeranong Parkway was going to be the first to get one of these.

Why would you have cameras pointing in opposite directions though? That suddenly makes every vehicle with only one plate (ie. motorbikes, bogans) exempt from the speeding fines.

Why would you slow down at the camera? That’s stupid (and not a little bit annoying). The speed limit doesn’t change, so why should your speed? Set your cruise when you enter the Parkway, and turn it off when you leave. The speed cameras are of no consequence to anyone but criminals.

The actual device that picks up the speed is fixed as it is built into the road, the camera is only there to take the image not detect the speed.

the cameras at hindmarsh dr in question are radar cameras not sensor camera as they are at cotter road, they also have infrared flashes. It is possible that the camera is broken or been tampered with..

Simple method for avoiding fines from speed cameras. Don’t speed. Very, very easy. But with more than a few driver unable to deal with the concept that a speed camera set to 100 will not fine you for doing 100 I’m not surprised people haven’t figured out the single easiest and cheapest defence…

The detector loops sense the presence of a vehicle, or large mass of metal to be precise. Two would be required to determine a time taken to travel between two points, but they are not accurate enough for speed measuring purposes.

Actually they are, as most speed camera’s in the ACT, especially those at lights do you induction loops to measure the speed.

The one in question doesn’t seem to be this style though.

I thought the smaller box behind the big box is the flash – from what I saw it seems as if they’ve pointed the camera right at it.

Has anyone been fined from this camera?
There arent any sensors that are cut into the road so it would seem?

Uses a radar rather than road sensor. Behave for 100m or so either side of it and you’ll be fine.

Everything is backwards in Tuggeranong. Hi-oh!

my theory was someone has vandalised it, because the one that goes with it is still facing south. it is also pointing more towards the shrubs rather than the road.

Old news, been slowing down earlier for ages. But good to warn the community.
