Who said folk was a lot of sedentary old blokes in moleskins, wiry grey beards playing tin whistles??!!

OK, so there IS an element of that, but not tonight, Josephine, Clementine, Annie and Lovely Nancy. It’s time to dance!

The Band Who Knew Too Much: Exciting Australian songs propelled by energetic jazz-like woodchop rhythm! Add some strong local lyric, with gang vocal delivery and their unique sound is complete. After leaving the Woodford Folk Festival-ers gasping for breath and the name of a good podiatrist, TBWKTM are headed to Canberra.

The Band Who Knew Too Much are a bona-fide foolproof floor-packing band. For over a decade they have branded their sound around the world; a highly energetic act that is at home singing on the festival stage, busking unplugged on the city streets, or anything in between! Washboard/Accordion driven anthems about spending the rent, hard rubbish nights and of course, the immortal BEER O’CLOCK!! It’s happy hour, energetic party music for everyone.

The Band Who Knew Too Much embrace the brattiness and flaws of everyday life and turn them into material for an intoxicating party of endless energy- like being stuck in the exact moment of winning the AFL premiership cup and feeling the pain and tears of every losing season drift off your shoulders and disappear in the air.’ ‘After 15 years of proving it, The Band Who Knew Too Much are a truly classic Australian band with an undying spirit for the complete abandon and joy we feel when we throw our fines out the window, slam the rent down on the bar and decide there’s no tomorrow- all night long.’

Special Guests: Beat Around The Bush. Andrew Cole and Tony Weston, who performed together for seven years, have recently reunited at Uranquinty Folk Festival. They sing an eclectic mix of music ranging from bush and traditional music to the folk music of the 60s and 70s. Andrew is a master of the 12 string guitar while Tony plays guitar, harmonica, washboard and lagerphone.

They can be very catchy, very corny, highly danceable to, and everything in between. Franklyn B. Paverty continue to thrive after 30 years in Canberra and all points north, south, east and west. And they’re coming to The Merry Muse soon.

Some others I can highly recommend: Chloe and Jason Roweth breathe life into Australiana and create their own; Collector (feat. Chloe and Jason) are sensational; Wongawilli from the Illawarra are sublime; and of course John Schumann and the Vagabond Crew absolutely ROCK while reminding you of all the Redgum stuff, clueing you into the mastery of Henry Lawson, and making you think about Australians who chose/choose to serve their country overseas, some paying the ultimate sacrifice.

I wouldn’t be dead for quids!

Aaaahhhhhh, the National! You never forget your first love! The aforementioned sedentary old blokes and some really amazing kids barely =
in school who already know their way around a fret board, or a button concertina, or several octaves on the tonsils.

I see this time and time again: some kid aged about 10 to 15 years old gets up on stage and says something like, ‘Here’s one I wrote a few years ago!’ It’s marvellous!

And then you get hot young bands in their late teens, early 20s absolutely cramming the dance floor with the most amazing dance music. I love it! I saw Babylon Circus in Bulli just over a week ago and the dance floor may never be the same.

It’s why I’m up at 3 in the morning banging out copy for no financial gain! For more on topic, see http://www.flickr.com/photos/ovhrprod (just scoot past the pics of the old-ish bloke doing the Man of Movember thing!!)

And if you want a life-changing experience THIS weekend, get thyself to the Illawarra Folk Festival at Slacky Flat, Bulli. http://www.illawarrafolkfestival.com.au — far too much fun to cram into a weekend, but by God we’ll try!

Gawd it is sooo true. And we have the National Folk Festival just around the corner.
