The Barton Parking gets ever tighter

The NCA are moving in on the acres of free parking around Barton enjoyed by our nation’s public servants.

The National Capital Authority (NCA) will commence upgrade works to the State Circle, Brisbane Avenue and Windsor Walk car parks in Barton on 2 April 2012.

The modifications will formalise the Windsor Walk car park and inhibit the use of the dirt mounds and the verge along State Circle. The works will make the parking area more efficient and will provide 86 formal spaces, increasing the quantity of formalised parking to the area.

The works will be stage to minimise the impact on users.

The works will involve:
— Temporary closure of the Windsor Walk Car Park to complete formalisation works (closure from April 2 until May 25).
— Installation of physical barriers along Brisbane Avenue to stop dangerous parking on the dirt mounds (Commencing in April).
— Installation of No Parking signs along State Circle and commencement of regular parking inspector patrols. Warnings will be issued for three consecutive days before issuing infringement notices (Commencing in April).
— Regrading and resurfacing works on the York Park car park upon completion of the Windsor Walk works.

A thought (I use the bus)

Now the Gum’nt sold the block between DFAT and Sydney Ave to private enterprise, to build another tower (all of 4 storeys), why not park there? They can’t enforce (can they) so until new owners fence it off / start to build, is it a freebie ????

NCA forgot to mention how much they’ll be charging to park inthe new carpark. Until there is an incentive for people to catch a BUS parking will always be chaotic in the triangle.

[One place I worked at overseas had a central carpark which was locked until a certain time of day in order to cater for people (95% women) who didn’t have the luxury of nicking off to work at the crack of dawn to nab all the good car spaces. In fact, this was mainly a security issue because as they started late, they finished later and were walking a long way in the dark to find their distant cars at the end of their shifts.

National Gallery underground carpark does the same thing. Doesn’t open til 930am to make sure the spots aren’t full of pubes.

Also hospital carpark next to Garran Oval.

So which one is the Windsor Walk Car Park? Google Maps tells me that Windsor Walk is the path that runs behind the church and past Minter Ellison, but that doesn’t seem to be the area they’re talking about here.

To answer my own question, evidently this is the proper name for the mud puddle next to the DFAT car park.

Sounds like they mean around the DFAT car park, and the Carpark behind PM&C, and the Carpark of Shame (the mudpuddle one).

Seriously, where are all those cars going to park? Where’s the pay-park high rise they were going to build?

The cars park at home and everyone catches the bus to work.

If they live in Canberra.

We need some good park & rides before we can think of reducing reliance on central car-parking. Anybody use that one in Mawson?

The Mawson one is supposed to be very good. There is a possibility that one might be set up on Yarra Glen also. (http://www.environment.act.gov.au/transport_and_planning/studies_and_projects/park_ride_study). Because the Yarra Glenn stop is on a direct route to the Triangle and the City I reckon that one would really take off.

First time I have ever heard going to work early described as ‘nicking off’.

How about that area across the road from Old Parliament House? The NCA doesn’t seem to mind anyone parking, dumping shipping containers, lighting fires or camping there.

One rule for whitie, and entirely another story for Aborigines apparently. The number of cars parked at the Tent Embassy with impunity has jumped from five to seven regulars. Instead of parking under the trees, three of the cars were right in the middle of the Land Axis view today, which is very rude to tourists and people who care about the fantastic vista. HELLO KATIE GALLAGHER: Where are the parking inspectors?

In the pay carpark behind the AFP? Is that still less than 50% full every day?

Enough whinging, pay parking should be in the triangle already. It would then relieve congestion, get people into work using public transport and bikes, and make life easier for parents who have to work different hours and NEED a car to find a park.

Parents who work in Civic, Belco, Woden, Tuggeranong and the airport already pay.

My only problem with this is that a great many mothers carry an unfair burden of driving offspring to school, arriving at work late, and being consequently unable to find a park.
