The Battle of Queanbeyan

The Canberra Times has dramatic coverage of a large Anzac Day brawl outside Walsh’s Hotel in Quangers:

A huge brawl erupted onto Queanbeyan’s main street on Anzac Day, forcing local police to call in backup from Bungendore and Captains Flat.

Up to 40 people were involved in the fight, which took place outside Walsh’s Hotel on Monaro Street about 6pm.
The brawl, described by police as a ”major incident”, spilled out across the street and blocked traffic.

Queanbeyan Police inspector Chris Varley said officers arrived at the pub ”en mass” and arrested six people.

You’ll no doubt be surprised to hear alcohol has been blamed.

Something about this seems iffy, I was at Walshes and whilst I saw one guy removed by the police, I didn’t see any fight. If it happened earlier this would make sense as we were out the back, however we left (through the front door) at 6?? Also, this wasn’t reported in the Queanbeyan Age, which I would suggest would be pretty big news if Monaro st had been closed off?

Very strange!

Rough in the 80’s -yes..But still had some of the best times there..Especially State of Origin nights, the atmosphere was brilliant, even though a NSW loss usually triggered the biffo…

The battle of ’89 at Walsh’s (pre-renovations) was one to remember..chairs thrown through windows, punters falling in front of cars on the main street, and a screaming woman -minus dress clamped onto a patron’s head with her fingers buried up to the knuckle into his eyeballs.. Good to see they have revived some that old Walsh’s spirit !

Ah, those were the days!

Yep, the 1980s was certainly a fun decade. I was a drinker at Walsh’s on Sunday afternoons and we had some great times. In addition to the brawl which happened in the wake of the Raiders’ premiership win, there was also an abduction and shooting incident the previous year linked to Walsh’s and players from one of the local rugby league teams (Diggers? Abattoirs?). Quangers was certainly a rough town back then before gentrification. It was great.

Nothing on the Battle of Brisbane: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Brisbane

But probably the best Quangers could put on for ANZAC Day.

Ahh, what a pack of wusses. Back in the Good Old Days they knew how to do it – The Gays v. The Bikies v. the Cops….

The Star Hotel riot […] An estimated 4,000 people fought with police on the streets of Newcastle, New South Wales on the night of 19 September 1979.

Yep. Our WWI diggers were renowned for their sobriety…….. oh wait…

A brawl at Walsh’s Hotel? But the patrons of that establishment are always so high-brow and cultured, never drinking to excess and always on their best behaviour. There must be some mistake, surely?

A brawl? Near Walsh’s Pub? Who’d o’ thunk it?

on any given Sunday, you’ll find a LOT of old bikies in the beer garden.

Nicer side of Queanbo will be on show Saturday arvy: the Print Museum at 20 Farrer Place in central Queanbeyan is having an open day from 12.30 – 4.00 with old printing workers on hand to explain the machinery.

We call it ‘Little Civic’…

I’m guessing that there was no attention being paid to RSA at Walsh’s that day.

I’m also betting there are no consequences for the pub over it.

A brawl? Near Walsh’s Pub? Who’d o’ thunk it?

Interesting that they called in coppers from so far away, and not call on ours to help out. Aren’t each cities cops made special constables in each others area, or sumthin like that.

We just have to build a very high wall to keep you Canberrans out so you can feed on yourselves without anoying decent people.

Just another day in Quangers
