accessible access

A surprising number of you were at Canberra Hospital yesterday and felt the need to send in pictures of this carefully made, but somewhat redundant sign. (This one by Andy)

Of course, it would be much better if they’d used the usual symbol instead of words 😉

I was there and was moved on quite quickly filming out front of a building. Twas quite funny.

To quote the OED:

orig. U.S. Capable of being conveniently used or accessed by people with disabilities; of or designating goods, services, or facilities designed to meet the needs of the disabled.

It’s the new, polite, way of saying disabled people can get in this way.

It would *seem* to be redundant, but unfortunately if it just said “Access” then there would be no reason why the route wouldn’t contain stairs, or even one step up a kerb, both of which are “Accessibility” barriers.
