We have just been notified at work that the ACT Government has introduced a bill to amend the Holidays Act to better align the Canberra Day public holiday with Canberra’s birthday. The legislation changes the day of the Canberra Day public holiday to the second Monday in March each year, starting from 2008.

Canberra Day 2008 will now be celebrated on Monday 10 March.Your diaries, desk calendars and ‘bunch of dates’ may currently show Canberra Day as 17 March – please make note of the change. For more information about the change to Canberra Day visit the ACT Cheif Minister’s website

What this means: NO SAINT PATRICKS DAY ! MOVE IT BACK !

More training for would-be pirates would help alleviate this problem

You know it’s right.

It’s not like it was at the top of my inane BS list for 2008 el.

Here’s hoping they get it right next year and actually commiunciate properly with the relevant businesses.

Um, I knew about this last year, as did many other people.

I find it hard to blame the ACT Government (as stupid as they are) for the incompetence of diary/planner publishers.

Adza, for my job I do rely on my calendar/diary.

I spend $20-60 a year on a teacher’s planner which is meant to be up to date and includes Canberra Day.

The day is ‘blocked off’ but that’s ok, I’ll fix it.

If it was of such importance, the ACT Govt should have mentioned it more than just in March last year.

FFS, it’s meant to be an important day in the history of the Canberra region.

Nyssa76, I never rely on calendars for public holidays, I always check the official public holiday websites, but I guess thats just because of where I work and the need to get them super-correct.

For info, my desk calendar is wrong, but my diary and electronic diary are both correct.

Maybe blame the publishers for not checking before the print run??

Isn’t too bad, my partners birthday is on the 7th of march, My little brothers is on the 12th, more time to par-tay.

With St Pats day… Us Irish know how to celebrate… anything really, we dont need a day, we just need a pub with allot on tap

If I was in the business of making calendars, I’d consider it part of my job to make sure I’m up to date on the public holidays, not expect it to be spoonfed to me.

Just sayin.

GnT, but they are ‘advised’ by the Govt.

We all can’t just make certain dates public holidays.

If we could, I’d make 17 March Canberra Day just so I could celebrate St Paddy’s all day.

People seemed more chilled about it the first time round http://the-riotact.com/?p=4433

Blame the calendar manufacturers, not the government. If the gov released the info last year, it’s up to the calendar/diary makers to ensure they have the correct dates.

So quick to blame the government for everything.

Also means three 4-day weeks in a row, given Easter is early this year. Not a bad thing!

I’d suggest you consider keeping on with your plan about emailing your mates, as for most it will be new news.

My Department only circulated the advice yesterday – in any event its a good thing to be aware of, apart from the bit about having to take leave on St Pats day if you want to spend it at the pub.

That would mean that people who worked in the relevant ACT Govt offices would need to communcate relevant information to counterparts on time.

They are unable to do this because they are all too busy reading RiotAct.

So again, why wasn’t this transfered to diaries/calendars etc?

How hard would it have been?

Farkn, this was announced in March last year! You got me sucked in emailing all my mates and when I looked for a date on the media release there wasn’t one. So a bit more digging using the search field and I discovered that this release went public last year! Here’s the text from the mayor’s website…

CHANGES TO CANBERRA DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY FROM 2008

08-03-2007

View Media Release

I remember hearing about it last year too. In fact, I think I heard about it right here!

Adza, you can say it all you like, the fact of the matter is that the CALENDARS weren’t changed to reflect the new date and people have put in leave forms for holidays and will now have to change them.

It’s called better planning and forethought. I mean how hard is it to call up the people who organise calendars etc and tell them the new date BEFORE the printing process happens?

Mael, here, here!

LIC, it makes me want to run this year, but I don’t have the time or the money! 🙂

Mælinar’s official policy is – Screw Canberra day, I would rather celebrate drink green beer day.

I too assumed that from my calendar the 18th was a holidayand the week before Easter I could have made a weeks holiday out of it. Bugger: another leave form has to go in.

“ACT Govt, you’re a pack of morons and I can’t wait until the election.” Nyssa – the problem here is that the choice is between the ALP morons and the even worse morons the Liberals offer.

We were told about this last year.. it’s not new news.

hope too many people haven’t booked plane tickets or anything like that…

If the actual day is the 12th, then it should be on the 12th every year, not the 2nd Monday of the year.

Why are we stuck with such morons in Govt?

Dante, that may well be the case, however, all dates given for diaries, teacher planners (ACT Govt), calendars etc all state the 17th. So if it was decided LAST year, then one would assume (and correctly) that the dates would have been reflected in the said documents mentioned above.

It’s not rocket science.

Surely there’s a chicken shop owner who’s going to be devastated by all this?

Definitely makes more sense having it on the 2nd Monday, since the real Canberra Day is 12 March.

This was a media release from the 8th of March 2007.

Biggest stuff up in the immediate history of Canberra? This was arranged before Canberra Day last year!

Get some perspective people.

Any excuse to get stupidly drunk tybreaker.

St Pats day will still happen – but who cares about it anyway? This is Australia, not bloody Ireland! Assimmilate!

By all means, bring it in for 2009.

Don’t pull it up 2 months from the date FFS.

I loved the thought of St Paddy’s Day on Canberra Day. Plus, a small week at work.

ACT Govt, you’re a pack of morons and I can’t wait until the election.

If it was the 17th then we’d get the monday and friday off in the same week this year as it’s good friday on the 21st … would be a quiet three days inthe middle…

It makes a lot of sense for future years, I never could understand why it was always a week or so past the real date. But to change it this year and so close is stupid, for all the reasons above. People make plans well in advance these days.

This ticked off a lot of people I know; it ruined their plans to take the 3 days off that week (Friday is Good Friday) to get a nice long break…

Meh. Least St Patrick’s day is now a public holiday.

why is it not possible for you to celebrate your irish and canberan ancestry at the same time? eat green sheep…

Oh for f*cks sake. I just put in my leave for the Melbourne Grand Prix the other day and didn’t bother taking the Monday off because it was a public holiday. Thanks for the early notice you numpty pricks.
