When Limp Jimmy and Nancy Porker are pushing about their social networks that the Canberra Centre foodcourt before 1pm is the place to be then I know well enough to get down there.

I wish I’d charged up the video camera to get a better movie of it but that’s life.

Word had definitely gotten about with a radio reporter in attendance and plenty of cameras at the ready.

The balconies were lined and filled up further with people wondering what everyone else was looking at.

Given that most on the balconies only knew “something” was about to happen the situation was quickly comical.

It began with a solo performance of “We Are Australian” which grew and grew until 200 odd voices were filling the Canberra Centre foodcourt.

The Brindabella Chorus was putting on a show for their Sweet Adelines sisters who are in town this weekend.

These days I rate flashmobs with zombies as something overdone and lacking in imagination.

But when the flashmob performs a work of artistic merit in its own right it goes to show there’s life in the shambling legs yet.

It certainly livened up lunch in the Canberra Centre.

I didn’t know what was happening – there were so many people lining the rails I had to catch an escalator to get a glimpse, and voices ringing out from the grungy food court – it was great.

particularly the second video makes you realise how much awesome could be done in that space.

You Are Here beach party next year?

Love the dude in the beige jacket standing n the middle of it all – papratzi in the making. it may be old hat but I bet it made the day of the lunch crowd.

Flash mobs…whats next Canberra?! The time warp?!

Canberra, going forward!

Is it really a flash mob if that many people know its going to happen, isn’t it just a performance?

Well I didn’t know what was going to happen. Just that there would be something.

There’s another video from inside the food court here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mkU91lqDbg

🙂 Briliant! Should be much more of it!

Grown ass women! I find this a massive disruption should be banned…

We had about 225 women come along for the flashmob – about 40 or 50 from Brindabella Chorus with everyone else interstate people who have arrived early for this weekend’s comp, some of them fresh off the bus.

I am Australian is one of our regional songs – things that everyone learns so that we can have an impromptu sing whenever we run into other Sweet Adelines. You’re very likely to hear random barbershop singing around Civic this week, especially near Llewellyn Hall, or just look for women with a suspicious amount of bling and hair spray and ask them to give you a song!
