The Burch v. Dunne child protection privacy Deathmatch

Last week the Liberals’ Vicki Dunne stole a march on Labor’s Joy Burch revealing lapses in child protection protocols which sparked an investigation.

But there was some backstory we didn’t think was particularly relevant at the time.

The Liberal head flack Hannah Passfield sent us copies of Ms Dunne’s correspondence with the media release, which we duly published.

A few hours after we posted the letters on Google Docs (with parts redacted as supplied) we were asked to replace them with other versions. This was moderately intriguing so we asked why and got a terse “for security” answer.

It was interesting but we were busy so we just swapped the links over the to more “secure” documents.

The next day Joy Burch’s flack Victor Violante was in touch asking if we’d updated the documents and why?

Restraining the urge for a Gestapo like “VE ASK ZE QWESTIONS!” we passed on that we’d been asked to “for security”.

With that information in hand check out the Canberra Times story on this very issue.

”While she went to some effort to conceal the name – which indicates she knew she shouldn’t be putting it out in the public arena – she was lazy, she was tardy, she was indifferent to making sure she did that properly,” Ms Burch said.

”And as a result of the format it went out in, they [the organisation] were able to be identified and I think that’s very concerning, and I really think Mrs Dunne should provide an apology.”

Ms Burch also accused Mrs Dunne of publicly revealing that the children had been housed in the old Ginninderra police station.

As a result the building could no longer be used to house vulnerable children.

Mrs Dunne yesterday rejected Ms Burch’s criticism.

”The fact is these vulnerable children were placed in accommodation with no hot water, beds or heating and broken glass on the floor,” she said in a written statement.

For mine that last one’s something of a trump.

I wonder if anybody has correllated what Minister Burch said in the Legislative Assembly yesterday with her previous statements. Minister Burch advised that she was made aware that the use of these unapproved placements as early as July, and in her media release, said that she would ‘find it unacceptable if there had been a breach in the Act’. Given Minister Burch’s admission of knowledge, and the fact that she had not taken any action in at least a month, how can we be assured that she is acting in a transparent manner? In addition to this, Minister Burch also stated that Vicki Dunne was referring to an earlier placement of children that had no beds. Minister Burch stated that she believed that this most recent incident was an ‘isolated incident’. If it happened before, is it really an isolated incident?

I would also like to highlight that Minister Burch is constantly singing the praises of Care and Protection staff… I would like to point out the fact that while the staff at Care and Protection play a vital role in vulnerable children’s lives, it is the hardworking individuals and community services agencies that do the hard yards with these children and young people on a daily basis. I think there needs to be more recognition of the community sector and it’s provision of services to the Territory.

Maybe Ms Burch would like to live in this property herself, without hot water or heating, no bed, and glass on the floor, she has got to be joking, expecting children to be housed in these conditions.

I want more deathmatches.

I saw the redacted letters as they were originally posted. It was a pretty lame redaction as supplied by Vicki Dunne/Hannah Passfield – very easy to tell which agency was named, IMMHO. However, I wonder if that was her intention?

”The fact is these vulnerable children were placed in accommodation with no hot water, beds or heating and broken glass on the floor,” she said in a written statement.”
I love Dunne’s trump too.

So Burch has gone for the “If I make enough noise and fling enough crap, they won’t notice how much I stuffed up” strategy.

Ms Burch also accused Mrs Dunne of publicly revealing that the children had been housed in the old Ginninderra police station.

As a result the building could no longer be used to house vulnerable children.

So Burch seems to think that the old Police Station with no hot water, beds or heating and broken glass on the floor is suitable accommodation for vulnerable kiddies? Surely someone in Kiddie Services (or the Minister herself if she was aware of the issue) should get the sack for placing children with a group considered to be “not a suitable entity” and allowing them to be housed in such substandard accommodation.
