The Bureaucrat's Song

Now is not a happy time for Canberra’s public servants.

The prospect of either being sacked by Tony Abbott or having to work for Kevin Rudd is hardly an appealing one.

But with spring in the air in Canberra and a forecast of 20 degrees for tomorrow (and thereabouts through the week) it’s time to cheer up and what better way for it than to revisit the magnificent Bureaucrat’s Song from Futurama?

Sing along now!

When i was two there was a hurricane in Kingston Town
with a foot and a half of water
Everyone was alright, but I cried all night
It blew my alphabet blocks out of order
And they say
this boys born to be a bureaucrat
born to be all obsessive and snotty
I made my friends and relations fill long applications
to get into my tenth birthday party
:
But something changed when my man turned pro
:
I was sorting but I wasn’t smiling
:
He forget that it’s not about badges and ranks
:
It’s supposed to be about the filing!
People,
We didn’t choose to be bureaucrats
No that’s what our mighty Ja made us
We treat people like swine and make them stand in line
Even if nobody paid us
They say the world looks down on the bureaucrats
They say we’re anal, compulsive and wierd
But when push comes to shove you gotta do what you love
Even if it’s not a good idea
Zoidberg!
:
They said i probably shouldn’t be a surgeon
:
They poopooed my electric frankfurter
:
They said I probably shouldn’t fly with just one eye
:
I am Bender please insert girder
:
Everybody sing Jamaica!
:
Jamaica!
:
Just the bureaucrats – Jamaica!
:
Jamaica!
:
Just the grade nineteens!
:
Jamaica.
:
Sing me home,
When push comes to shove you gotta do what you love
Even if it’s not a good idea!

I love that song, even though I’m certainly not “all about the filing”. 🙂

“The prospect of either being sacked by Tony Abbott or having to work for Kevin Rudd is hardly an appealing one.”

Let us not forget the Labor redundancies as part of the efficiency dividend that have occurred over the last 6 years and will continue under a re-elected Labor government. Despite what the Greens and Labor tell you, there will be mass layoff no matter who gets the Lodge in September.

The real difference is that the Libs will tell you upfront that you’re gone, Labor will knife you in the back after declaring their undying support for you. And, to add insult to injury, the CPSU will issue a media release and get 5 minutes whinge time on 666ABC, but generally won’t give a stuff.

What will be the real tragedy is that those with talent will walk first and take decent private sector jobs sourced through the networks they have built. The remaining wood-ducks will just go on with being wood-ducks.
