Chief Minister Gallagher informs us that as part of the Centenary of Canberra a toilet has been installed at the Aimutin Public School in Timor-Leste’s capital Dili.

“It is a remarkable achievement that just over six months after the Dollars for Dili project was launched, we are already seeing the first tangible signs of the benefits it is delivering for the people of our friendship city,” the Chief Minister said.

“Aimutin Public School currently has more than 1,100 students and 25 teaching staff operating on three shifts a day. I am told there has been a desperate need for new sanitation facilities and so, today, thanks to our partners, Scouts Australia, Rotary International and local volunteers, the Dollars for Dili project has made its first mark.

“The lack of sanitation facilities in the schools of Timor-Leste has resulted in lower attendances, especially among girls and young women. This project, which will be repeated at other schools across Dili, will improve the health and education of young residents in this struggling new nation,” she said.

The Dollars for Dili charity project aims to raise $358,000 in total by the end of Canberra’s 2013 Centenary, representing a dollar for every Canberran.

Haha. Amen Deref.

What is the preference in East Timor, squat or pedestal?

Is the ACT government matching community donations or just promoting it? I would rather money go to this worthwhile project rather than phallic owls in Belconnen.

They can’t fix our potholes or reduce third party insurance costs for pensioners but they can afford to build luxuries in foreign countries.

Great set of priorities there!

Oh yeah. Toilets are a luxury. No doubt you don’t have one, WfG. How do you get along? Any signs of typhoid yet?

It’s probably only people with access to decent toilets who can afford to find them funny…And the English, of course.

Sounds like a worthwhile project.

I love the project description on the website

Two projects have been identified for delivery with the money raised. Project one aims to build the capacity of young people in Dili and project two aims to enhance education opportunities for young women and girls in Dili.

I guess enhancing education opportunities sounds better than “build a new s***house”.

“..the Dollars for Dili project has made its first SKIDmark” surely…
