You might not have noticed that Canberra had a “Canberra Country Music Festival” last year. (motto: “Music Dance Utes Horses – It’s A Lifestyle! Seriously Having A Good Time!”).

The World Best Festivals blog has this to say of that effort:

The inaugural Festival was held in 2009 at Tuggeranong Homestead in the southern suburbs of Canberra, Australia. This event had some 60 recording artists on 5 stages performing over a 3-day period. Whilst the performance quality was high, the audience was less than expected due to a combination of less than effective promotion and the absence of onsite camping for visitors.

But they’re having another go this year and hoping the move to exhibition park will cure what ailled them.

There’s more info on their website.

The question on everyone’s lip: when’s the Canberra Western Music Festival held?

Something like this will never work in this region until they get a big name star on the bill. Even the organisers of the Bungendore Muster try and get a big name performer as an attraction. I’m all for fostering local talent but when you’re talking about country music you need something to hook in the punters, especially it being a new event which flopped when first held.
