The case for a winter escape down the coast

Shellharbour

My family and I have arrived home to Canberra from a mini-break at the coast. It was lovely. Obviously it’s winter down there too, but gee-whiz an extra five to eight degrees makes a huge difference to how you feel.

This post isn’t meant to make you feel jealous; it’s a reminder that in 2 hours and 40 minutes you could be catching some rays from Shellharbour and the Wollongong surrounds. It’s a completely achievable day trip to break up your Canberra winter blues. I have lived here my whole life, and don’t get me wrong, I love it. I am a stayer.

BUT my hot tip as a local is to get out of here at least once between June-August (even if it’s just for the day).

We arrive just before the sunset. I captured this before we even unpacked the car kid-truck.

The next day we hit the park. In fact we road tested every park we came across. It’s so kid-friendly down there!

Swing

I love the light in this shot. It’s enhanced a filter that makes everything look whimsy-bright.

My son found this crab on the rocks and we moved him to this location for the photo shoot. Dead animals make for such lovely models! Look alive crab!

We walked to the milk bar. They sold Redskins and Milkos for 10c each. They also had those bubblegums wrapped with temporary tattoos for 20c. Childhood memories flooded back.

“Holidays with kids” is a nonsense sentence. The work simply comes with you. We were all up by 6am everyday just like home. Caffeine certainly helps those early starts and we found this great place called Village Fix. Coffee on the beach does taste better.

I’d like to introduce my pug Punky. She’s turning into quite the celebrity with all her dog couture and hilarious ways. She has her own Instagram dog account as well as a wardrobe that turns heads.

Australian winters are not so bad when you have a deserted beach at your doorstep.
Quiet Beach

We pretended it was summer at a balmy 16 degrees. We had BBQ lunch followed by cake and watermelon. My kids can eat a whole melon in 2.8 minutes.

Time for another beautiful sunset. Goodnight Shellharbour. Thank you for the pink skies.

Pink Sunset

Our last day. The clouds look stormy but they were all bark and no bite.

Road tripping home! This 10 minutes of silence was brought to you by Chupa Chups.

And lastly, here’s me. I took a sabbatical from make-up, hair and nails while we were away. I know to some this will sound like a vain non-event but to those of us who lippy everyday, it was a refreshing change!

Jenny

When you read South Coast, did you immediately think Bateman’s Bay? Where do you take your mini-break? Would you rather BEACH or SNOW at this time of the year? Tell me everything! I need to know.

PS. I am not a photographer. Just someone who loves to take photos. An iPhone-ographer. [Wink wink].

Wow, have you just pressed a button.

A standout memory from childhood (and about 60 years ago), was a picnic at the Shellharbour Beach.
I can still taste the devon and tomato sauce sandwiches (on newly baked bread) our family had on a glorious sunny day.

Thank you.

Cranky, you’ve made my night. I can picture you there by your description. You had me at devon 😉

Hey cranky thats awesome.

Which beach was it, was it the main beach to the north, the boat harbour or the beach to the south near the coal loader. Was the harbour even built then? What was the town and streets like? Was the pub and the camping grounds there? Was the sea pool there? Was the pub there?

I tried oysters once. I think I know why they are giving them away for free 😉

You sound a little bit like that old joke about two guys in a bar:

“G’day, can I buy you a drink?”

“No thanks, I tried it once and didn’t like it.”

“How about a smoke then?”

“No thanks, tried it once and didn’t like it.”

“Let’s change the subject then. Got any kids?”

“Yep!”

“Just the one?”

Really! Hot tip!

You can even train the kids to go in and get them for you.

They think its fun, but won’t eat them, so it is 100% all yours.

Hilarious! You’re a genius and I like your style 🙂

I think my dog needs a duck jacket like yours, Jenny!

Totally Amy! Canberra dogs need an extra coat on days like today 😉

oh no jenny. you have just spoilt my favourite place on the coast. i stumbled across shellharbour around 20 years ago. we used to have first dibs on the corner camping spot which overlooks the ocean just down from the sea pool. it was great to surf at cowries, redsands, barrack point, bass point, the farm and mystics. we would flick through minimurra to kiama and up to the gong for the nrl game. the shellharbour pub on the corner was our local and many a friday and saturday night was spent sipping beverages overlooking the moored boats.

its now super crowded with the divided road from sydney heading to kiama and a huge influx of home buyers pushed from sydney snapping up everything in site. only last week it was reported in the SMH the avaerage house price in now 885k.

lucky we grabbed an investment cottage two streets back in 2001 for 105k.

did you know there are plans to built the biggest marina on the east coast there, just north of the coal loader. I remember when those were rolling farm hills, now they are all housing estates.

still good. just not like it once was.

You’re right @vintage123 I should have started the post with Shhhhhhhhh…… don’t tell anyone! But luckily I am not that well read 😉 Your cottage sounds divine! My husband fell in love with Minimurra. I am more of a Kiama girl. Have you been to the Flour Water Salt bakery there? YUM!
