My family and I have arrived home to Canberra from a mini-break at the coast. It was lovely. Obviously it’s winter down there too, but gee-whiz an extra five to eight degrees makes a huge difference to how you feel.
This post isn’t meant to make you feel jealous; it’s a reminder that in 2 hours and 40 minutes you could be catching some rays from Shellharbour and the Wollongong surrounds. It’s a completely achievable day trip to break up your Canberra winter blues. I have lived here my whole life, and don’t get me wrong, I love it. I am a stayer.
BUT my hot tip as a local is to get out of here at least once between June-August (even if it’s just for the day).
We arrive just before the sunset. I captured this before we even unpacked the car kid-truck.
The next day we hit the park. In fact we road tested every park we came across. It’s so kid-friendly down there!
I love the light in this shot. It’s enhanced a filter that makes everything look whimsy-bright.
My son found this crab on the rocks and we moved him to this location for the photo shoot. Dead animals make for such lovely models! Look alive crab!
We walked to the milk bar. They sold Redskins and Milkos for 10c each. They also had those bubblegums wrapped with temporary tattoos for 20c. Childhood memories flooded back.
“Holidays with kids” is a nonsense sentence. The work simply comes with you. We were all up by 6am everyday just like home. Caffeine certainly helps those early starts and we found this great place called Village Fix. Coffee on the beach does taste better.
I’d like to introduce my pug Punky. She’s turning into quite the celebrity with all her dog couture and hilarious ways. She has her own Instagram dog account as well as a wardrobe that turns heads.
Australian winters are not so bad when you have a deserted beach at your doorstep.
We pretended it was summer at a balmy 16 degrees. We had BBQ lunch followed by cake and watermelon. My kids can eat a whole melon in 2.8 minutes.

Our last day. The clouds look stormy but they were all bark and no bite.

And lastly, here’s me. I took a sabbatical from make-up, hair and nails while we were away. I know to some this will sound like a vain non-event but to those of us who lippy everyday, it was a refreshing change!
