The most disturbing thing is not our respective appetites for Mr Firth or Ms Evans but that the Canberra Centenary people seem to think this event is to “Celebrate the life and times of Jane Austen and early Australian settlement; the latter part of which seems to have entirely escaped the event organisers.

[After reading The Mill on the Floss I never went near Middlemarch. :'(]

Isn’t it slightly strange that the ACT Government are paying for balloon events in Canowindra as part of the Canberra Centenary?
IE: Canowindra’s about as far from Canberra as Wollongong\Kiama, and even though we’re paying for a group of Scouts to train\attend\enjoy, its being promoted as a Canberra tourism event, despite being a NSW Tourism-supported event to boost the Canowindra economy?

Lightweights…

Try reading Middlemarch.

Your brain will hate you for decades.

Cough. Tries to be modest. Loses fight. What on earth makes you think I haven’t read *all* of Ms Evans? My brain and I are still on speaking terms, too. Sometimes. If the chemicals are right.

And my dear Ms poptop, I was not saying that you emphasised the clothes; rather, than those types of festivals do. The ‘some people’ referred to the festival.

Mr Firth is not my cup of tea, though, however wet his shirt or even breeches may be.

If it was a battle of wits, poptop would be unarmed… 🙂

I am sensible of my shortcomings and the error in spelling of Miss Austen’s name is amongst the chiefest of them. I had not realised I was emphasising the clothing [and still don’t see it].

While Poetix and I may conduct the most vicious blood feud behind politely smiling faces, we probably can agree that Ms Austen was a genius at human observation and the best comedy writer of her age.

I am not convinced Miss Austen would be insulted by the BBC production, at least not more than any author giving up their work to the exigencies of an imperfect medium. There are plenty of authors whose work gets treated with considerably less care and respect.

My comments were intended to be of a vaguely humorous tone, I regret the obvious pain caused by them.

Still . . . Colin Firth looking all churning and constrained? FWOAR !

Sir John, not known for an ability to draw a distinction between lively conversation and unpleasant argument, urged the ladies to abandon the satisfactory pleasures of the web-site picnic for an engaging bitch fight upon the croquet field.

Hmmmm, restrained of you JB not to note that Barcham bears more than a passing resemblance to Colin Firth in character. I’ll say it then!

I notice the Jane Austin Festival is venturing to Lanyon, so it can be a proxy Pemberley, for a picnic on Sunday. As there is no lake and no Colin Firth, I am not entirely convinced.

I really don’t like how some people emphasise the clothes of the era, rather than Austen’s (note spellling) brilliant prose. I also dislike those films. They are an insult to an author who rose above what she was supposed to be interested in.

Bloody harmless fun….
