The changing landscape of Canberra music venues

Change is in the air. The Just Bands list of Canberra venues is both incomplete, and now….out of date.

Things have changed, or are about to…eg. The Green Room, which for years has been our better venue, is about to go the way of the DoDo.

So…where to play/watch bands play? What are the hot spots? Not so hot spots? Just Bands wants to know where you are getting your dose of local music goodness.

The Front seems to be a good option to check out…I like the sound of these “The Band Broke Up” nights.

Nickamc, Hippo does a fair bit of blues and folk as well

I live in Melbourne now but the amount of venues in Canberra for original bands that are frequently populated by people SUCKS. Here’s a list off the top of my head.

Civic:
-The Phoenix (just about everything except for metal, although Inflatable Ingrid and Super Best Friends got away with gigs there)
-Bar 32 (pretty much anything, I’m fairly sure)
-The Front (pretty much anything that isn’t very very loud)
-Transit (just about anything again, although metal is frowned upon due to The Waldorf)
-Civic Youth Centre (Mainly just for younger bands)
-ANU Bar (Pretty much anything, except DJ’s)
-Knightsbridge Penthouse (mainly DJ’s, but have been known to host the odd band)
-Hippo (Pretty much just Jazz)

Belco:
-The Pot Belly (pretty much anything except DJ’s, but who’d want to see DJ’s at the Pot?)
-The Basement (Mainly just hard rock and metal nowadays)
-UC Bar (Is that even still operating after the Greenroom moved back?)

Woden:
I guess now that the Greenroom’s gone/about to go, its a bit of a ghost town.

and I never ever went to a gig in Tuggeranong.

That’s all I can think of for now.
