The Chronicle limps online, via Facebook

The Chronicle is many things:

    — The largest circulation publication in Canberra
    — The best way to identify rented houses by uncollected Chronicles killing the lawn
    — The only news outlet that cares about Community Council meetings
    — A community lifeline for the elderly

I’m sure there are others.

But the Canberra Times stable mate has never managed to get online, until now.

Now, like an angry teenager with an axe to grind the Chronicle, with its teams of journalists and editors, has a Facebook page where they can put up their stories.

The Chronicle isn’t all bad. In 1994 they printed several articles I wrote and submitted by mail (no email submitting back then). They stopped printing them after a new editor took over. And no, I didn’t get paid.

you get yours delivered to the mailbox? wow.. mine always lands somewhere near my driveway..

Ditto. The delivery kid in my area gets mummy to drive him around as he tosses them out the rear passenger side window.

I like getting my Chronicle, and always put in my mail box, BUT I wish they had more gossip, I suppose it’s good for a tv guide, so what are you whinging for? It’s free!

Wish mine arrived in my letterbox. Fetching a wet soggy bag of newspaper from the ground near the road is annoying. If it was in my letterbox and dry, I might consider reading it…

I think you’ll find selective distribution would cost far, far more than blanket delivery (and hurt the dodgy numbers they feed advertisers)

Yeah, aware of the potential for dodgy advertising claims. And you’re probably right about the delivery theory, too. Like Jazz, I wish they’d have the decency to chuck it straight into my bin.

They don’t come close to the old Valley View. Excellent local sport coverage is no more since it was gobbled up by the CT/Chronicle.

Oops. Confused “land tax” with “rates”.

Speaking of which do you even know what land tax is?

?? Only from what’s written on the ACT Revenue office site

I believe it’s called “Council Rate” in Sydney.

Same here.

So that goes to show that it, The Chronicle, is junk?
A 60c junk for that matter, and our land tax probably goes to pay for it…

No the advertising pays for it. Nothing what so ever to do with the government or taxes.

Speaking of which do you even know what land tax is?

I pressed post too soon, I wanted to add that I like the idea of this. I have always had a soft spot for that publication.

Won’t even come close to Riotact though.

You forgot

– Wrapped in a a plastic cover which does little except prevent the paper from drying out after water gets in there.

Oh, I know!

I was having more trouble accessing my soggy Chronicle the other day through the bag than the rain/moisture did.

I suppose it’s only saving grace was that it wasn’t soaked through or unreadable.

The deliverers in our area seem to obey the no junk mail writing on our letter box.

I like the Chronicle’s trades directory, it’s quite useful. It usually contains ads from tradies to too tight to advertise in the Yellow Pages and/or who havn’t been recommended by word of mouth, so I avoid anyone in there like the plague. The one time I broke that rule, it proved the rule.

Our dog loves to shred it and leave it scattered around the backyard for me to clean up. Probably stops her from barking for half an hour……..(http://the-riotact.com/?p=24526)

Would be nice if they stopped wasting their money and resources by not delivering their rag to people who don’t want to read it.

I think you’ll find selective distribution would cost far, far more than blanket delivery (and hurt the dodgy numbers they feed advertisers)

I think you will still find it littering your lawn VicePope

It gets delivered. It gets unwrapped. It gets recycled. (Has anyone noticed that being read is not part of the cycle?). It will be even easier to ignore online.

When I was at uni we used to call it The Chronic Chronicle.

Good on them for finding a way of filling the online void that the owners wouldn’t fill with an official website of their own.

It allows an avenue for them to gather feedback on articles and debates to continue, plus not all of us are deigned worthy by the owners of receiving an actual hardcopy, so it helps us keep in touch with what they write.

Not sure where you are going with the CC comment JB. The Chronicle journos Meredith and Katina do indeed attend all our meetings. They take their role seriously and put in the hard yards to get local stories out to local audiences every week.

But your assertion is not right, with recent GCC meeting matters being covered by ABC Radio (news and live) and TV, Win TV, 2CA (news and live) and the Canberra Times, plus further afield IT News and a number of other IT-related online news aggregators.

I’ve also seen numerous stories over the last few weeks through various outlets covering Weston, North Canberra and Woden issues, plus the formation of the much missed South Canberra CC.

You forgot
