The confused boerewors. Images of Canberra

boerewors

So I came across this in Dickson Woolies yesterday.

We have a package of “The British Sausage Co”, claiming to be “uniquely Australian” in selling us a South African sausage?

Don’t get me wrong, I love a Boerewors and it’s a great way to cook sausage for large numbers. (it cooks in a spiral, turns easily, and then you chop to length when serving).

But how do you go calling that definitively Afrikaaner food a “British Sausage” which, better still is “Uniquely Australian”?

Do words mean nothing at all to these people?

Here in the niknak household, we love a good sausage.

Finar.

That said, those curly ones are known as grogan sausages cus they look like something the dog turned out.

They are delicious. The trick is NOT to prick them or burst them. They need to cook with the fat inside the skin.

You’d have the stats! Out of interest, is the ‘referrer’ field in the logs different for those who viewed a page from a tweet link?

Different tweet links are different sort of referrers. All the bit.ly style things are their own beast in the logs.

Just wondering. I don’t often see you retweet a link to a story…

You put out an extra Twitter ‘tweet’ re: this thread. I wonder if that helped raise interest/views?

Yes, I find myself flicking back to this thread lots. Which, for a vegetarian, is odd. Must not analyse that too much. Perhaps every Wednesday should be Fryday?

My brother is involved with this company so its great to see some interest!

Whilst we are on the subject of my brothers sausages… please try these amazing ones too:

Going up against a picture of a sausage Andrew Barr’s government procurement changes never really had a chance did they?

@ madamcholet

They purport to do a cumberland sausage. They make them as links and the grind is not particularly coarse. I think they are just ordinary pork sausages with the same herbs used in a cumberland sausage.

I can’t speak for this one, but generally they’re pretty good. Quite peppery, and like any thick sausage you have to take the time to cook it on a low heat.

Cropped out of the shot are a range of other sausages that are, if not uniquely australian, at least british, like the cumberland (the green packaging).

I think you’re all confused. Let me clarify the messages on this package.

When the company making these sausages called themselves “The British Sausage Company”, ‘British’ wasn’t intended as a description of the sausage, but of the customer. They make sausages designed for the particular constitution of the guts of British immigrants to Australia, NOT sausages in a British style, as you all seem to be suggesting.

They are uniquely Australian insofar as the British immigrant to Australia has a slightly different constitution from his or her less adventurous compatriot, having been exposed to actual human food, unlike those Brits who’ve never left the UK.

You’re welcome.

It looks delicious. Is it as good as it looks?

I suppose we’re all part of the same empire, what.

The Boer Wars ring any bells? (Not the sausage.)

Check into how those wars turned out.

True! But they became an independent republic fifty odd yeats ago. Such history in a sausage.

About the right amount of irony to get a hipster to start eating meat again.

This is very funny. I have seen it and have been reluctant to buy it (who the hell wants a BritishBoerie?) Haven’t managed to find decent boerewors in Canberra still order from Sydney

Great spot! But half a kilo for under $6? Apart from the confused provenance/ambiguous pedigree I’d want to know what actual meat makes up this delicacy. And I sometimes do buy meat for my husband, before any dismissive comments are made about my knowledge of same (meat, that is).

Also, I wonder what percentage of JB’s photography is devoted to meat, beer or rugby? It’s all good, but as you might say about that sausage, it seems to be everlasting.

Colonialism?

Do they do Cumberland sausage? This one also comes in a ring and can be cut to requirements. That’s a good old British sausage.

Forget nationality, I’m not paying $5.89 for mystery tube meat paste impersonates triple curler.

I’ve cooked one before. Yes, it turns really easy.

Does the British Sausage Co produce other products? Maybe they also sell Thai Tofu Sticks….
