The demise of the Maram

We’ve been hearing that Tuggeranong’s leading music venue, The Maram, was joining the long list of broken dreams down there.

This in from a source which goes with other things we’ve been hearing:

They haven’t been paying their bills so ACTEWAGL shut off their power, and they haven’t been paying the rent so the landlord is evicting the owners. Apparently last week they ran out of beer on tap due to suppliers withdrawing credit.

They had to cancel their gigs on Friday night which was a melbourne band as they had no power!

News from a reliable source advised that Booze and Balls opened months ago and it looks like it will be lost also.

Fingers crossed the Maram opens again. The music venue there is actually great these days. Was starting to go from strength to strength, the even had a a reasonable international rap act there recently (Xzibit). Is there another music venue southside?

So sad reading this years later with still no Maram nor any other worthwhile southside venue to take up the reigns..
I’m moving north asap

it is true B&B is owned by the owners of the maram, my partner runs a club there, also ran it there when it was felt but they closed for not paying bills aswel..

Heh I remember a few years ago the owner coming in to pay one of his bills. Dropped 9k in cash in front of me like it was nothing.

Gee, who would have thought a business at a venue that has had approx 5 different owners and 3 different names in the last 7 or so years would fail again…

Ahhh, the Gartside Street Curse claims another one…

Pity, the area really needs live music venues.

It is not the end of them apparently. According to a friend of a friend they are just opening up another bar/nightclub somewhere in Kingston or Manuka.

A “friend of a friend” is always the most reliable source of information.

Are you being sarcastic? No but seriously that is why I mentioned it was a friend of a friend, may be true may not be but I think it is true as another club has opened up in Manuka, My friend has always been a reliable source of information as well. I just don’t know who’s name the Maram owner is going to use when he signs up for the electricity bill. (If it’s true of course)

Well in my experience anything starting with “a friend of a friend told me” is always to be taken with a serious grain of salt.

Booze and Balls actually.

Having been there and wondering why there was a serious lack of booze, this might explain a thing or two. I’m wondering if the expansion to Manuka was done as a way of trying to save the business? That said, I do hope that the owner pulls through as Canberra needs more live music venue’s, not less…

The “owner” sounds like they have just ripped off a whole heap of suppliers and then packed up and moved somewhere else to do it all again. And I imagine Booze and Balls is a pool hall, not a live music venue.
I agree, we need more live music venues however not when they are run by shonks who just rip everyone else off.

How many closures since the new liquor laws?

I think it is more due to the lack of payment of other bills as opposed to the Liquor Laws that shut this place down, I can imagine if it was because they kept getting fined that they shut down then that would be because of the Liquor Laws, but because the owner does not want to play bills… That’s kind of his own fault

Sorry.. Knew it was something and Balls… Booze and Balls does sounds a helluvalot better then Beer and Balls…

it’s all relative…

It’s already open, called Beer and Balls in Manuka… Where Felt was last year, hopefully they can restock some of the liquor so you can get a drink when you go up there though…

Booze and Balls actually.

Another live venue bites the dust….

sigh…

Must be the fault of poker machines.

Pfft, they haven’t even pay their webhosting bill – http://www.themaram.com.au is serving an error saying “The owner of this website should please contact Sozo Production to have the billing/support problem for this website resolved”.

Seems they owe some money for the website…

Absolutely true. My band was supposed to be a support act on Friday.

I was told that the person who owned all the audio equipment had pulled his gear out on Thursday afternoon, after getting a tipoff from a friend of the owner. The power had indeed been cut off.

There is a terse status update on Maram Bar’s facebook page saying “closed until further notice”. I understand the business is up for sale.
