The expanding Mugga Lane Landfill

johnboy 9 November 2012 33

mugga lane

Territory and Municipal Services have kicked off a consultation on making the Mugga Lane landfill larger:

The ACT Government is seeking community comment on a proposal to develop the next stage of landfill at the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre. A series of displays and community information sessions will be held over the coming weeks.

“The ACT has one active landfill site for general and putrescible (organic) waste at Mugga Lane. It is estimated that the current landfill area can only accommodate another three years of waste generated by the ACT. As such, work is now underway to plan for the continuation of landfill at Mugga Lane,” Director, ACT NOWaste, Chris Ware, said.

“The ACT Government has commenced planning for the development of Mugga Stage 5 adjacent to the current landfill area. This new space will be around 37 hectares in size (or about half the size of the previous landfill areas) and is expected to service the ACT’s need for landfill until at least 2035.”

No Waste 2010 is obviously coming along swimmingly.

I only started noticing the tip smell about two years ago – I live over 1 km away (1.8 km drive from home to tip). Does anyone know whether they changed their practices around that time, or when they start putting slaughtered roos nearby?

This is about the same time I became aware of the smell also. It was there last week for a couple of morning again – appears to be a blend of disposable nappies and compost from the green place.
It was really bad about six months ago and the popular excuse was that there wasn’t time at the end of the day for the contractors to cover the daily deliveries with earth so the smell was there overnight and early the next day. I was also informed that the government had purchased the next property North in Mugga Lane and the tip face would be further developed there. There was no mention of this proposal to “move East”. I understand that Queanbeyan no longer dump their garbage at Mugga Lane choosing to use “the big hole” at Woodlawn (which is a lot “greener”).
Can’t see why the ACT can’t do the same thing. Hello, are you watching this space Shane?

There was a big tip known as Mugga,
with a grave to bury the chuggers.
Chisholm gets all the fumes,
and some think that they’re blooms,
which amuses the tip we call Mugga.

I would have loved to get the word putrescible in there somewhere…

There is a big tip known as Mugger,
Which shits off the worthies of Tugger
Being fulsomely putrescible
It makes them irascible;
Inner-northian Poetix doesn’t need to give a bugger
which amuses the tip we call Mugga.

Why are they even asking for public comment? There’s nothing anywhere near that site!!!

You obviously haven’t been in Macarthur or Fadden when the wind is blowing a certain way….

The proposed new siting is on “the other side of the hill” that directs the smell to Macarthur, Fadden, Chisholm etc.
This means the smell will now be directed towards (wait for it): TRALEE !
Oh what a delicious irony.

I love how they made the landfill look really green whilst the surrounding areas are a drab khaki. Guess all that waste makes good fertilizer. More of it I say. Then give it away to us fro free.

The first decision for their new minister? I’m sure Shane Rattenbury and TAMS managers are going to get along just fine!

I think they should put the new landfill sections further South, closer to Macarthur.

Thanks sniper for that magnificent idea. However there is going to be a landfill there already,… the cemetery,, and there are also at least two pits filled with slaughtered kangaroos.

I hear there’s some good land next to the Gaol or possibly even closer to the NSW border.

The fools! They should have just done it and put out a press release when they were finished.

They’ve just opened a Pandora’s box of bitching and opposition from those people who didn’t realise they’d be living next to a landfill when they bought a house next to a landfill.
