The expanding Mugga Lane Landfill

Territory and Municipal Services have kicked off a consultation on making the Mugga Lane landfill larger:

The ACT Government is seeking community comment on a proposal to develop the next stage of landfill at the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre. A series of displays and community information sessions will be held over the coming weeks.

“The ACT has one active landfill site for general and putrescible (organic) waste at Mugga Lane. It is estimated that the current landfill area can only accommodate another three years of waste generated by the ACT. As such, work is now underway to plan for the continuation of landfill at Mugga Lane,” Director, ACT NOWaste, Chris Ware, said.

“The ACT Government has commenced planning for the development of Mugga Stage 5 adjacent to the current landfill area. This new space will be around 37 hectares in size (or about half the size of the previous landfill areas) and is expected to service the ACT’s need for landfill until at least 2035.”

No Waste 2010 is obviously coming along swimmingly.

A third wheelie bin for green waste would have helped.

That may be the case in the inner north however, here in Qbn we don’t even get left over sour grapes..

Just go to ‘your profile’ page and tick the ‘peel me small ripe fruits’ box under notification settings. I’m sure he’ll appreciate the exercise riding out there.

The putrid aroma from the tip is as bad as it has ever been this morning (Fadden, Macarthur & Chisholm)
In fact, this is the 5th day in a row. which inspires me to say the following:

Time to start making The Green earn his money, I think
For there must be an solution to the Mugga Lane stink
If we still had the presence of old Bob Brown
I am sure he would say”close it down”
To avoid the stress and looks forlorn
Take the mess North to a place called Woodlawn.

There was a big tip known as Mugga,
with a grave to bury the chuggers.
Chisholm gets all the fumes,
and some think that they’re blooms,
which amuses the tip we call Mugga.

I would have loved to get the word putrescible in there somewhere…

There is a big tip known as Mugger,
Which shits off the worthies of Tugger
Being fulsomely putrescible
It makes them irascible;
Inner-northian Poetix doesn’t need to give a bugger
which amuses the tip we call Mugga.

Spills over a bit until it is no longer a limerick.

Have you no respect for form?

the last line (your line) snuck in. I didn’t know it was still there, and not being a subscriber, I cannot edit.

Would have been better as a clerihew perhaps, in any case.

Yes, it’s a wonderful life as a paid subscriber. We sit, composing and editing at our leisure, as JB feeds us grapes.

Income for the ARHS, too.

Railing garbage from Canberra isn’t an option. The cost of building an intermodel facility at Hume wouldn’t be justified and I understand there will be no more freight allowed on the Canberra line. The last freight on the Canberra line was a delivery of petrol to Shell at Fyshwich several years ago. All petrol now comes by road and all garbage would have to be moved by road also. That is not to say it couldn’t be done effectively by road as a lot of double handling would be eliminated. Queanbeyan must be using using road.

Why not kill a few birds with one stone, and revitalise the rail line from Hume to Qbn, build a loading depot at Hume, and send train loads of garbage off to Woodlawn.

The train spotters would love it, those with sensitive noses would love it, would cut the number of staff at Mugga Lane, and we get to play with real trains 🙂

That’s the kind of lateral thinking we need more of.

Indeed

There is a stinky tip called Mugga
near a place that they call tugger
Coz it’s full of G’s plastic
which is not so fantastic
coz it’s a bit of a bugger

Can’t see why the ACT can’t do the same thing. Hello, are you watching this space Shane?

Bad smells are part of being green. Ask anyone who has a composting toilet, or the people who work in that six-star green office building in Melbourne (where the executive work to a different air system to the workers who suffer the poo smells). It’s the price you must pay for a healthy planet, silly!

Good luck getting a middle-class Green to do anything about disposable nappies. You’d think they should be banned along with plastic shopping bags, given that there’s an environmentally sound alternative. (I’m afraid the only way to get middle-class daddies to do a little bit of fathering is to make the poo part easy.)

I only started noticing the tip smell about two years ago – I live over 1 km away (1.8 km drive from home to tip). Does anyone know whether they changed their practices around that time, or when they start putting slaughtered roos nearby?

This is about the same time I became aware of the smell also. It was there last week for a couple of morning again – appears to be a blend of disposable nappies and compost from the green place.
It was really bad about six months ago and the popular excuse was that there wasn’t time at the end of the day for the contractors to cover the daily deliveries with earth so the smell was there overnight and early the next day. I was also informed that the government had purchased the next property North in Mugga Lane and the tip face would be further developed there. There was no mention of this proposal to “move East”. I understand that Queanbeyan no longer dump their garbage at Mugga Lane choosing to use “the big hole” at Woodlawn (which is a lot “greener”).
Can’t see why the ACT can’t do the same thing. Hello, are you watching this space Shane?

Why are they even asking for public comment? There’s nothing anywhere near that site!!!

You obviously haven’t been in Macarthur or Fadden when the wind is blowing a certain way….

The proposed new siting is on “the other side of the hill” that directs the smell to Macarthur, Fadden, Chisholm etc.
This means the smell will now be directed towards (wait for it): TRALEE !
Oh what a delicious irony.

won’t somebody think of the children?

I love how they made the landfill look really green whilst the surrounding areas are a drab khaki. Guess all that waste makes good fertilizer. More of it I say. Then give it away to us fro free.

The first decision for their new minister? I’m sure Shane Rattenbury and TAMS managers are going to get along just fine!

I think they should put the new landfill sections further South, closer to Macarthur.

Thanks sniper for that magnificent idea. However there is going to be a landfill there already,… the cemetery,, and there are also at least two pits filled with slaughtered kangaroos.

I hear there’s some good land next to the Gaol or possibly even closer to the NSW border.

Will that put it under a flight path?

Now there’s a sensible solution.

The fools! They should have just done it and put out a press release when they were finished.

They’ve just opened a Pandora’s box of bitching and opposition from those people who didn’t realise they’d be living next to a landfill when they bought a house next to a landfill.
