Thanks so much to all of you who’ve emailled and texted me with the news today’s Telegraph has identifed Olivia in the epic saga of Steve Tucker.

Everyone’s tastes will vary, but I reckon it was worth giving it a go.

I am so glad that she didn’t turn out to be orange. Steve obviously isn’t a League player.

Oh bloodnut – you made me snort my coffee out of my nose.

And News Ltd has no justification in the “public interest” for going as far as it has.

I think you’ll find that “public interest” (in the journalistic sense) has been redefined as “something the public would be interested in”.

She had the pics and her name on Facebook and the settings were public. Privacy is not an issue here, she displayed herself to the entire world and she only has herself to blame for any consequences that might have arisen.

If they got it from her Facebook page, then they’ve broken the Copyright Act 1969.

i only believe in gay marriage when both chicks are hot.

I think you’re talking to Waiting for Godot there, not me. I have a sound understanding of how Facebook works, which is why I don’t have my picture on it.

Erg0 I think you need to understand facebook better. I’m sure she would have had her page private and I think she may have even deactivated her account last week as she isn’t listed as one of my friends anymore. You can easily get photos off one of her friend’s profiles even if she isn’t tagged.

“She only has herself to blame”? Do tell, which part of this is she “to blame” for?

It probably would have been smart to take down her Facebook page for a bit just in case, but there wasn’t enough information in the original email to identify her so the journo obviously went to some effort to chase down her last name and photo. I fail to see how the public interest is served in any way by the publication of this information, which will be somewhat detrimental to Olivia personally. This is blatant exploitation of a private individual in order to sell a few papers, which may be expected nowadays but could hardly be called ethical.

Girl smiles at boy. Girl was just being friendly and cant even remember his name. Boy thinks she was coming on to him that he has a chance and is interested, spend all his time chasing her up and daydreaming about her.

happens all the time ?

Steve is a dickhead, pure and simple. His department should have terminated his employment immediately. His actions and their inaction, have caused this girl a great deal of stress and embarrassment.

What if Olivia had a boyfriend or was married? What if she was ‘your other half’ and was now to embarrassed to go out and was copping loads of flack at work, would you not be hunting down Steve to knock six shades of sh*t out of him? I know I would.

I know Liv and I think this photo is very old. It’s not a particularly nice one, she is much slimmer and prettier in person. Poor thing didn’t want any of this attention!

She (the story with this photo that is) is the top ranked story on News.com, Sunday Telegraph and Herald Sun websites. I certainly hope she makes a civil claim against News Ltd for this. There’s a good chance depending on how similar she looks now to the pic that she’ll have all sorts approaching her after this. And News Ltd has no justification in the “public interest” for going as far as it has. They should pay up and issue an apology for such blatant invasion of privacy. I hope it works out ok for her in any case.

If you look at the SNOG facebook photos there are other photos from the ball. The night that true love (didn’t) blossom!

Looking at the photo above, I take it Steve didn’t have the pleasure of meeting the lass on the right.

she’s a ‘ball organiser’.

Very nice 🙂

This poem left a strong and positive impression on me.

I feel sorry for Olivia – she didn’t want to be dragged into this moron’s 10 seconds of fame and now here we are with these photos – wonder how ‘princess leia’ and ‘hot chick next to Olivia’ are feeling about all of this now? they must be thrilled that the world has decided it’s time they were published all over the place…

So who’s the hot chick on the right then? I think, it’s time to fire off some emails…

Poor girl having her name and face splashed around the news. Why? Just because she spoke to a fool at a party. I can only hope this saga blows over quickly so she can live her life in peace and privacy.

Clown Killer9:22 pm 21 Nov 10

… Oh and for the record. I’d give my left testicle just to be ‘despised’ by a girl as pretty as Olivia!

Clown Killer9:16 pm 21 Nov 10

It’s grow up time people. If you’re alive in this world, you’ve got to expect something like this sooner rather than later. I give the guy credit for following his heart. I give ‘Olivia’ credit for being demure. There’s too many wannabe closet dwelling tin-foil hat wearing butt-plugs here bandying about the ‘stalker’ tag without any real appreciation of what it really means to be ‘stalked’.

I will not care to speculate upon her Western eyes beauty until in the fullness of time I see her dressed in a micro bikini.

From that photo in the other thread – I didn’t think Steve was much of an oil painting.

DermottBanana7:46 pm 21 Nov 10

When the Israelis stole the identity of some Australians living in Israel, and used them to make fake passports for a hit in Dubai earlier this year, the media became obsessed with speaking to the people whose identities were stolen.
In the media’s defence, some top journalists argued that those people had been caught up in a media story, and so their privacy was irrelevant. Yet they hadn’t done anything to seek out such publicity and wished to remain private citizens.
I believe public figures – politicians, rock stars, movie stars etc – who court media attention are valid targets for being reported on and identified. Those who commit crimes of public note (Ivan Milat, David Eastman etc) are probably fair game for the media to report on and plaster their pictures all over the cyber-world.
But a girl who went to a party and met some unhinged guy?
Shouldn’t we be letting her live in peace?

justin heywood6:49 pm 21 Nov 10

We have to be prepared for these incidental moments of “publicity” in the 21st century. And despite some people criticising the publication of her photo and name, I can think of far worse things for which to be remembered.

Some people here are forcefully defensive of privacy rights, but I doubt they’ve thought through the consequences of what they’re asking for. Perhaps, in their perfect world, it’s impossible to name anyone for doing anything unless permission is first obtained. What a great way to cover up all kinds of things.

Agreed. Some might say it’s romantic but to me, it reeks of stalking. Shudder. Poor Olivia. She wanted nothing to do with him and she didn’t want to be identified. Sometimes the 21 st century goes too far.

“Things went awry when Mr Tucker sent an email that would go viral, after it was posted on Canberra-based website the-riotact.com.”

Congrats, you’re famous! INTERNET famous!

JessicaNumber2:50 pm 21 Nov 10

You don’t seriously think this is about her appearance? You don’t suppose maybe she has any other positive qualities or some shared interests with Steve?

Setting up a poll to rate Olivia’s physical attractiveness as stalkable or not stalkable? She’s a public servant, not a model, and even if she was a model, Steve wanted to finish his conversation, not gawk at her.

I hope.

I feel sorry for her though, one night out and her name gets known internationally after a random guy sends a stupid email. Then to get your face plastered all over the newspaper just because they want to.. Unwanted attention much.

+1000000

Olivia made it blatantly clear through those close to her that she didn’t want anything to do with scary stalker Steve, wanted to be left alone, and most importantly DID NOT WANT TO BE IDENTIFIED.

Sadly her privacy couldn’t be respected.

And now, with her identity revealed she is going suffer hugely and the harassment will no doubt increase.

Ah the game of 21st century – mass stalking.

I think she’s attractive, although a bit hard to tell from just one photo. I don’t think I would be sending an all staff in department email to find her though..

The media has no morals.

Pommy bastard11:55 am 21 Nov 10

She’s quite attractive, certainly not unattractive. Each of us has our own “type”, maybe she hit all Mr Tucker’s right buttons. (I’m sure he would have liked her to hit all his right buiuttons.)
