The Goon Bag makes the Urban Dictionary

goon bag

Last week’s much missed intern Ruqi tipped me off that Garema Place’s home of cheap speed and cough medicine, the Goon Bag, has earned itself a listing in the Urban Dictionary:

“The Goon Bag” is a specific location in Garema Place, Civic, Canbera City, Australia. This is a common hang out for alternitive sub-cultures, such as goth, emo, indie, punks, etc.

The Goon Bag is a sculpture of a metal over-sized cushion, which is mounted on black marble ‘steps’ that rise about a meter off the ground.

The actual sculpture was named ‘the goon bag’ due to it’s metal cushion, that resembles the silver bag that cheep wine (also known as goon) comes in.

“i’ll see you at the goon bag today after school”

Now that’s public art making an impact!

On an unrelated note, how does Johnboy know where to get cheap speed? I’ve never seen him even think about touching drugs!

It is called “product placement” in movies, and “cash for comment” on talkback radio. How much they paying you JB? 🙂

… and you can get vodka and cranberry in goon bags now too…

Holy crap on a cracker I have not seen or heard of this fresh hell. In what concentrations? And how bad does it taste?

I barely set foot in a bottle shop since I started kegging my own homebrew but methinks I’ll have to eyeball this phenomenon personally else I shan’t believe it.

they’ve been out for a while, and more are appearing. I first noticed them at Jim Murphy’s at the airport, Smirnoff make them. I think the grog quotient is12%. You can get margarita-y ones, mojito ones…

Pretty sure they were a direct response by the booze companies to the alcopops tax. Because of the way it was to be applied to “single serve” “ready to drink” beverages, they put it in a cask, and voilà, it isn’t taxed so much again…

I had some customers bring their fancy bottle of plonk as BYO then picked it up and saw Smirnoff. My first reaction was to freak out but sure as apples it was RTD, weaker than some of the house wine and they drank it as wine. They may have been wearing thongs but they had a civilised date.

Apparently premix is the new wine.

We never drank goon straight either. It was always loon, roon or voon. Or put it all together and call it “punch”…

I’m stunned that I’ve missed out on a drinking game when I was still young enough to enjoy drinking games. It’s probably a bit more crowd pleasing than Zoom Bang Schwartz Profigliano

Bang? I haven’t encountered that one.

I’d be surprised if our younger generation even knows what a goon bag is.

There was a brief resurgence in the use of goon bags when Kay-Rudd was trying to bring in the Alcopops tax… and you can get vodka and cranberry in goon bags now too…

You might just be surprised by the popularity of a certain backyard game called “Goon of Fortune.” It requires a group of people, a 4l goon bag and a Hills Hoist. You can probably imagine how it’s played. Considering both of these things are apparently Australian inventions, it’s surprising that it hasn’t become a national sport yet. :p

Goon of fortune is definitely a national sport and an important reason not to remove that ugly old hills hoist from a “groups allowed” rental property!

It’s been mentioned on Encyclopaedia Dramatica for a while now. Though I would recommend only those with a strong resolve (and a sense of humour) read it.

ED lives?!

I’m old enough to have imbibed on the silver pillow at the end of a late evening after the flash stuff in bottles had run out, but I’ve never heard it called a goon bag.

The urban dictionary now needs to revisit how to use its vs it’s, and its authoritative-ness will go up ten-fold.

I’d be surprised if our younger generation even knows what a goon bag is.

Cheep wine, the stuff that kills the canaries.

“earned”?

Isn’t urbandictionary a wiki, ie, anyone can contribute?

I think anyone can submit an entry but there is a process before it gets officially entered. I think it’s based on votes/popularity and a decision by some moderators and once it passes then it’s included.
