The Chiefly Stanhope has announced that the ACT Government has acquired for itself an architect, one Alastair Swayn:

“In a city with a global reputation for its strength and quality of design, there has been a growing conversation about the need for a dedicated ACT Government Architect,” Mr Stanhope said. “Someone with vision and expertise, to advise the Government, inspire industry and to generate a desire for excellence.

“I am pleased that local Canberra architect, Alastair Swayn has accepted this important appointment. He is amongst the nation’s leaders in sustainable design and his expertise in this area will be invaluable in his new advisory role.

“The new position has been made possible because a unique partnership between the ACT Government and the University of Canberra, which also sees Alastair Swayn appointed as a Professorial Fellow at the University of Canberra. As a Professorial Fellow he will share his skills and expertise with the next generation of local architects.”

A shame they didn’t do this before the latest round of construction.

Heard him on ABC666 this morning- he sounded fairly realistic about what could be achieved in the three-way tussle between ACT government, National Capital Authority, and developers.

I think so, border. His track record is actually not that good.

And will he be truly “independent”? The abolished Planning & Land Council was supposed to be, but became yet another rubber stamp for all sorts of idiocies and architectural crimes.

As always, time will tell, but I’m convinced this is not the great leap forward that is so badly needed.
