Community Services have announced the release of an “Emergency Guide and Grab and Go Kit”.

The Emergency Guide and Grab and Go Kit has been developed to provide you with guidance on how to prepare and act during a range of emergencies.

The Kit includes two parts:

— An Emergency Guide that outlines key emergencies that could occur and how you can prepare for them. This includes how to prepare for emergencies such as earthquakes, bushfires and storms.

— A Grab and Go Booklet that can be used to fill in your details for easy reference during an emergency. This includes space to record emergency contacts, details of neighbours and medical information. There are also tear-out information cards for you to exchange contact details with trusted neighbours.

The information in this Kit will assist you in developing an emergency plan for your home and have all your key information in one place in case you are required to evacuate. There are some things that you can do to make sure you are well-equipped for an emergency or unplanned situation:

— Make an emergency plan in case you need to evacuate your home
— Put together an emergency kit
— Record your medical information
— Keep important contact details together and up-to-date.

The documents are available for download.

Water, shelter, clothing and medical supplies can all be taken from people who don’t have guns.

Along with food, booze, and potential breeding partners.

And more guns. One can never have too many guns.

Haha, that made no sense! I’m going to be so rooted in an emergency.

OK, we’ve discussed what needs to be in our Go-kits, an each settled on what we will have in our own kit. But where to go and how to get there?

What if I am lucky and get to a place I thought would be safe, and the locals who are already there don’t like the look of me and shout “Go Back To Where You Came From”?

Step 2 in disaster preparedness: Have a place to go, and failing that be prepared to sit it out where you are. Having a well stocked bunker in the back-yard can have it’s benefits. Just hunker down and wait for it to blow over, whether it a cyclone or civil unrest.

Which is why I have a couple of guns, but I’m not obsessed like a lot of people. I’ll still be walked and living and breeding after the rest on you have picked each other off.

Now now, this isn’t a cock fight. Just talking the practicalities of firearms in a bob. Zombies and charging bull elephants are a very real threat in a post-apocalyptic Australia. The need to crack car engine blocks less so, as the overwhelming majority of them will be inedible stationary targets.

Personally I’ve made sure I live close to raw crops of Soylent Green.

a qualified firearms instructor I know I can regularly hit a Stevian/Deref/VG sized target out to 800m with my .300 WINMAG.

Is that like saying “Craig Lowndes can lap Mount Panorama in my car in 2:20”?

I was told by a waitress the other night:
I’ll just grab that menu off you

Firstly, the menu is not on me. Secondly, it’s not a grab it’s a take.

I’ve grown up here but damn the idiots around who utilise such crap vernacular should read a f***ing book. – Boardwalk Empire reference.

Enough with the guns already. All you really need is a short-barrel pump action shottie (are they still legal?) and for ammo some double ought buck shot, some number 9 bird shot, some deer slugs and you’re ready to handle any situation involving the brain-eating undead.

Absolutely. It’s always the no-nothing wanna-be survivalists that are obsessed with their firepower (compensating for something?). Water, shelter, clothing and medical supplies are just as important but don’t seem to figure in their mindset.

Personally in my undead apocalypse fantasy I’d like one of these:

Make every shot count.

I love a zero sum game.

Presumably Captain RAAF is going to hide in the forests and only emerge to hunt obese school children for food.

If he is/was in the RAAF he’d be lucky to hit anything

There are plenty of RAAFies who are qualified to Crossed Rifles and above who, would be happy to dispel your errant belief.

They’re civvies mate, cut em’ some slack. =-)

I spent enough years in the ARA to learn how to shoot, lead scout for 3 years in an infantry unit, a qualified firearms instructor I know I can regularly hit a Stevian/Deref/VG sized target out to 800m with my .300 WINMAG. The RAAF was a place to put my feet up and have a spell and torment civvies. =-)

So you’ve got a big gun. We all know that’s just because you have to compensate

1000 rounds of ammo, if you’re talking a round like 308, is around 25 kgs alone. Sounding more like Grab and Drag.

He did say high powered, so to me, .308 is an intermediate round at the lower/middle end of the scale in terms of stopping power. In post apocalyptic times, I’d want guaranteed stopping power, so I’d go for .375H&H. It will stop anything from a shambling zombie to a charging bull elephant and also makes an absolute mess of a cars engine block.

I’ve fired countless rounds of 7.62×51 (or .308 for the civilian version) and I’d say it’s stopping power is more than adequate for anything that might come to hand, including post-apocalyptic zombies.

On the other hand, I spent half a day on the range last week next to a bloke who was shooting what I was told was a .375 when I asked what was making all the noise. It was a long action bolt gun, so I presume it was a Holland and Holland, or something similar. I was about 5m away from him, but I could feel the muzzle blast slap my face every time he fired a shot. I think everybody on the firing line (including him) had developed a flinch by the time he’d finished.

So, .375 is way overkill for zombies and no fun to shoot, in my opinion. Personally I’d probably go for the 5.56, although I’m sure this will invite mockery from the Captain.

Maybe it’s a 4-bore, which looks like it has more uses than just taking down African elephants.

My grab and go kit consists of a shotgun, high powered rifle and a thousand rounds of ammo.

These will ensure that in the case of an emergency, I will have all the supplies i’ll need and also be safe from looters, zombies, aliens etc…..

What – no tinfoil hat????

It’s not in his kit, it’s everyday wear and wound tight, which explains a lot

You’ll be shot at Checkpoint Charlie (he didn’t even crack a smile)

My SHTF bag has $10k cash in mixed currency, four passports in different names and nationalities, and some spacefood sticks.

tbh in a real emergency, a high powered rifle or shotgun is all you’ll need. Strong gun control means you’ll have the upper hand against everyone else.

Water, tinned food, knives, medication, torches, fire starting gear etc. There are a number of “survival pantry” guides available on the internet, including one sponsored by the Federal Government.

And, as the Captain says, don’t forget the shooters.
