The Greens are promising to lead our huddled masses to the nirvana of Open Government.

    The plan includes:

    1. Promote digital governance in the ACT by:
    1.1. Developing a Charter and implementation plan for proactive release of public data;
    1.2. Funding innovative projects from the Gov2.0 community;
    1.3. Employing a Digital Records Officer to transition to a consistent whole-of-government records system;
    1.4. Enhancing online consultation.

    2. Strengthen the independence of statutory offices by appointing them as Officers of the Parliament;

    3. Give the community more rights by reforming essential laws for accountable governance, such as our Freedom of Information Act and Administrative Decisions (Judicial Review) Act;

    4. Update legislation and regulations to improve community consultation, ensuring legislation meets contemporary expectations.

They’ll be pushing s*** uphill. Let’s compare how the ACT Government lets us all know what’s happening with major road works, compared with work on Commonwealth land.

Here’s how the National Capital Authority give us information about the Parkes Way widening work;

Here’s how the ACT Government give us information about the same project;

If only every project that the ACT Government was responsible for had an equivalent Commonwealth Government agency, we might just get a bit of an idea of what the hell is going on.

OK, so, Greens, if you support transparency, how about admitting journalists, allowing filming, and taking questions at the next Greens national conference?
No?
Well shut up then.

“Promote digital governance in the ACT by….”

Does this mean they’ll continue given everyone in the ACT the finger?

Caroline Le Couteur speaking about this on Win News: “What chance does the community got?”

Actually had to replay it a few times before I could believe it. I expect this language from the homies they bust on COPS, not from someone I’m paying to be my voice in parliament.

It would mean something if the Greens had done anything to hold this government to account in the past four years.

Online consultation, Gov2.0 … so we’ll have more ways of seeing what they want us to see.

Good work, Greenies but Mezza76 makes a strong point.

Real trick will be getting ministers and department heads to actually implement open government. Both are terrified of the concept.

Whenever I see this I remember by Yes Minister:

Bernard Woolley: “Well, yes, Sir…I mean, it [open government] is the Minister’s policy after all.”

Sir Arnold: “My dear boy, it is a contradiction in terms: you can be open or you can have government.”
