The horse has bolted at the Mint, so of course they're closing the gate.

Last week we reported on the work of alleged criminal mastermind William Grzeskowiak, 48, of Alabaster Street, Monash. Who is accused of smuggling fantastic sums out of the Mint with the cunning ruse of stuffing coins in his boots and blaming the steelcaps when the metal detector went off.

Rather than doing the decent thing, and resign, the bigwigs at the Mint have put out a media release.

The Mint has engaged the Australian Federal Police Protective Services to carry out an urgent review of its physical security arrangements to identify any weaknesses in the current system, and to recommend required corrective actions.

One can only hope that rather relying on metal detectors to tell them if money is leaving the site they put in place decent inventory and quality control processes so they can tell if things are going missing. That they’ve engaged Protective Services and not an auditor does not bode well.

Whoever I’m tipping the ANAO will involve themselves somewhere along the line… that ought to be a laugh.

yes, you have to wonder if skipping the ANAO was for fear of what that body would have to say.

The ANAO is there for precisely this sort of thing; it strikes me as strange that they would approach the AFP before anyone else.

The only other comment I have is that I would not want to be the ASA or GM/DG of the Mint as there should be hell to pay for a breach like this.
