ACT Policing is asking anyone who saw a suspicious man in the Hume area early this morning (Sunday, November 4) to contact Crime Stoppers.

Around 12.25am a man was driving his car Southbound on the Monaro Highway, he had just passed the intersection of the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive when a man stepped out from the tree line and flagged him down.

After he pulled his car over to the side of the road the offender allegedly approached the victim’s car and produced a handgun, demanding the man’s wallet.

The offender removed a small sum of cash from the wallet before striking the man in the side of the head twice. At this point the offender stepped away from the car and the victim drove away from the area and contacted police.

The offender is described as African in appearance, 183cm (6’) tall, in his mid-twenties with a skinny build. He was wearing a short sleeved dark shirt with a wave motif and blue jeans.

Police are urging anyone who saw a man matching the above description in the Hume area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the website www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

The parable was saying nothing whatsoever about your duty to help others. (That is pretty much a given in Christianity.) It was all about bigotry, and how stupid it is to hate somebody for what they are (eg, a filthy foreigner), when sometimes even a filthy foreigner’s actions are something even you, the ‘chosen person’ should aspire to.

Luckily, almost 50% of the ACT’s schoolchildren are being educated in a school system where these values are being taught.

For the other 50+%, we have to cross our fingers and hope they develop good morals despite the moral vacuum in which they are being educated.

Just when you make a post I 100% agree with you have to tack on your damn caveat about private schools l. You are waaay overfixated and getting monotonous. Maybe time to let it go, just a little. A good post lost .

The key difference between mature ideologies, as taught in Canberra’s religious schools, and new-fangled post-stalinist ideologies, as taught in Canberra’s government schools, is that the former teach that actions are more important than words/ceremony/appearances, whereas the latter shy away from moral values and instead teach that the important thing in life is to say the right thing regardless of the realities, aka ‘Political Correctness”.

This 40-year-long defect in the public education system explains today’s culture of self-obsessed materialism and the ubiquity of casual dishonesty into our society.
You can’t leave your front door open and if you leave your phone somewhere, whoever finds it will not return it to you. Bureaucratic fraud isn’t punished because it’s endemic. And the type of fraud leftism gets us is exemplified in the corrupt over-invoicing and credit cards for hoookers that Craig Thompson is going down for.

Seriously, could you be any more of a dick?

There can’t be too many blokes of African appearence who like to play with guns wandering around.

I’m sure the filth would have a fair idea who this is. It’s just a matter of getting the evidence.

I hope that when they do catch him the beak does a better job than is the norm in this town.

We don’t need lads on the loose with a penchant for playing with firearms in public.

I have always wondered what I’d do in that situation. What made me think about it originally was the victim that escaped from Ivan Milat because they flagged down a car on the Hume. Every time I drive past there I think, what would I do if someone came staggering out from the Belangalo turn off in front of MY car? I’d hope that I would stop. But then you hear stories like this and wonder if you should?

Yeah, I had been thinking about him also. His name was Paul Onions and managed to escape from Ivan Milat (there is a school of thought that says it may not have even been Ivan however I don’t succumb to that line of thinking). If memory serves me correctly the car that stopped was the third he attempted to flag down. The only reason the lady stopped was because he was that desperate he ran out in front of her and gave her no choice. As soon as she had stopped he jumped into the car in panic and screamed for her to drive. I doubt he would have been picked up if he had not been so desperate.

If i was a female driving down the Hwy after dark and a male tried to wave me down i would NOT stop, for obvious reasons.

Why would you want to stop anyway? I have one rule regarding any attempted “good Samaritan” incidents – just keep driving or walking past. Don’t get involved, it is just too risky.

It’s part of being a decent human being and a useful member of the community…two things you obviously know nothing about.

Far right nutters generally know nothing about community or helping others in need.

I think you lot are all a bit confused as to the moral lesson in the “Good Samaritan” parable. It was about the actions of a member of an out-group confusing preconceived notions held by the in-group towards that out-group.

Mmm, here’s two versions of the original, people can read it for themselves:

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+10%3A25-37&version=NKJV

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%2010:25-37&version=KJV (Best version by far!)

It is about saying that anyone of whatever group or race can be your neighbour, but also that acting to help others is an obligation. I hope the victim here makes a full recovery.

(And #17, even using a phone can sometimes help.)

I’m fine with forking out the two denarii but what a waste of good wine…

I think most people in their 20s from the southside would have a fair idea who it was, I’m sure the police do as well.

Because in a city with a population of around 350,000+ people, most residents between 20-30 years who live southside are an a first name basis with armed felons. That and the police must have a pretty good idea who it was if they decided to put out a media release asking for witnesses instead of, I dunno, arresting the guy.

Did you know that over 5,000 people a week use the internet? Words with numbers and facts.

I don’t normally converse with people who are wrong and smug (I have brilliantly avoided working in the public service for this exact reason), so I’ll just dot point this.

– Arresting someone before you obtain evidence is dumb, really dumb.
– It’s definitely not the first time the person who fits this description has pulled a gun on someone
– I’m a basically jesus, so I know just about errryyy thang that happens.

Even if they do reasonably suspect whoever it is that Johnny_Moe thinks it is, they’d still ask the public if they know anything. An eye witness would go a long way to confirming any suspicions the police might have.

As a 20 year old woman, if someone flagged me down on a dark road in the middle of the night I wouldn’t stop. I might if it were a woman but really how are you to know there’s not someone hiding somewhere. I probably just wouldn’t risk it.

This all seems a little bit sus to me….
i sure as f**k wouldn’t stop for a someone of ‘African’ appearance at 12:25am on the monaro highway
(no offence) but seriously..
for all we know the victim had a bad night on the pokies and had to think of an excuse as to how he lost his money

Yes they do. I`ve read a few police media releases with those exact words.

Why not just dispense with the bullshit and say “white skin with South African accent”, or “skinny and black” (or whatever the case may be). Political correctness just obscures the facts.

Just to elaborate, I don’t want to discriminate, so if the perp is a recent arrival from *anywhere*, then off he should go. Back to Blighty, Africa or wherever they came from. Just remove him.

Do the ACT police describe suspects as “Aboriginal in appearance” if they look Indigenous?

WTF? Just WTF?

Flagging down someone in the wee small hours, pretending to be in trouble, and then robbing the good samaritan at gunpoint. It doesn’t get any better than that.

This is awful. It breaks social cohesion. People in future may be in distress at the roadside, and those passing by will keep passing by, rather than risk a potential robbery.

Inflammatory comment warning…

I work with an African guy, and he’s blue eyed and pale skinned, so “African in appearance” is a fairly interesting eupehmism.

Anyway, if the perp is apprehended, and if he actually is a recent arrival from Africa, rather than just “African in appearance”, then I would cheerfully vote for him to be packed off back to whence he came.

Inflammatory comment warning off, and I’m now putting on my asbestos underwear.
