The Indians are coming!

Thumper 7 January 2008 97

No, not a line from a John Wayne movie. The Indian cricket team (sans monkeys) should be in Canberra today to prepare to be flogged by our mighty Comets.

From memory the last touring side to play the ACT was New Zealand, who got smoked all around manuka by one Jack Smith who hit a double ton. They were scheduled to visit the Bradman Museum in Bowral before moving on to Canberra. Hopefully I’ll get out to Manuka on Thursday or friday and catch a bit of the action. I guess the Jewel of India in Manuka is probably booked out for a while.

All the best to them and i hope they enjoy their stay in our city.

[Ed. Maybe not. Seems that the Indian Cricket team has been ordered to stay in Sydney and there is some conjecture that the entire tour may now be cancelled]

Minor point: We’ve already been accused of being Klansmen (and women) by the CT for using the word ‘poofta’.
Do we really need to go down the ‘racial slur’ path when the Indian team is in town?

So they could be taking their bats and balls and going home?

Hang on, I thought we (well Symonds and therefore the rest of the Aus cricket team and therefore all fans there of and residents of this great land) were the monkeys?

Surely there is nothing racially discrimitory about calling people from India Indians (even with the bad wild west pun)

Oh and it looks like the tour may be in doubt according to this ABC story

Damn, I was so looking forward to going to the game and making monkey noises back at them!

You can’t give us a tour and then take it back!

Skidbladnir Skidbladnir 5:15 pm 07 Jan 08

Thats like getting a massage with a happy ending, and then being stopped before the agreed happy ending!

On another note, its meant to be 35C with low humidity for Friday and the weekend, the Comets may melt and be an easy win for a team of Indians (assuming they can get over themselves).

Guess we got gorillas in canberra instead of monkeys, then?

Indian board suspends tour of Aust

And the text on my screen right now:

“Indian board suspends tour of Aust

Posted 8 minutes ago

The Indian cricket board (BCCI) has suspended its tour of Australia pending the outcome of an appeal for suspended spinner Harbhajan Singh.

“The Board will appeal to the International Cricket Council to review the decision of the Match Referee and suspend its operation till the appeal is disposed of,” the BCCI said in a statement.

The BCCI met in Delhi today to discuss the future of the tour and confirmed the Indians have appealed against the three-match suspension given to spinner Harbajahn Singh for racially abusing Australian batsman Andrew Symonds.

The Indians have also expressed their anger about the umpiring in the second Test and there are reports in Indian media that umpire Steve Bucknor will not be officiating in the third Test in Perth.

Today Indian players sat on the team bus for two hours before going back into the hotel, despite being scheduled to travel to Canberra for a tour match.

The tour has not been called off. ABC “PM” says so.

I would like to see the Swami Army here, in force. We shall, of course, make them welcome (won’t we?).

Thumper Thumper 7:04 pm 07 Jan 08

in no way did I say anything that was racially motivated.

Pull your head in sunshine.

Thumper Thumper 7:12 pm 07 Jan 08

I should add that I too want to see the Indians here. I love the way their batsman play and I really want to go see them play.

Sadly, if they are waiting on the appeal against harbhajan then they are holding the Australian public, Australian cricket, and world cricket to ransom.

think of the ramifications of it all. Team A loses first test, complains, and then goes home.

This is really a bad move by the Indians IF they really are considering abandoning the tour.

I should also point out that the reasn we now have neutral umpires is because of the woeful unpiring that used to happen on the subcontinent prior to the 1980s where any ball that hit an opposition pad was given out lbw, even if they were a non striker standing at square leg.

Poor, poor move by the Indians if this true.

Sore losers v sore winners. Who would want to watch the rest of the series anyway?

ABC news just reported that the Indians are not moving until they hear more from the Indian board of control.

Agreed 100% Thumper. What a bunch of hypocritical wankers.

They’re just as poor in the sportsmanship department as ANY international team.

Thumper Thumper 7:26 pm 07 Jan 08

And sadly, I love my cricket, even the poms….

Ditto. Sad that such a great test match (one of the best I’ve seen for a while) has been marred by utterly crap umpiring and racial sledging.

Unfortunately for Mr Kumble & co, the crap umpiring had absolutely nothing to do with the last 3 Indian wickets falling in 4 balls from a part time finger-spinner. With 8 minutes of play remaining, no less…

Thumper Thumper 7:34 pm 07 Jan 08

Indeed, a total left arm purveyor of pies.

That is what the Indians should be looking at.

Or maybe Dhoni’s lbw, f#ck me, and under 12 div 3 player wouldn’t get out like that.

Thumper Thumper 7:36 pm 07 Jan 08

I should add that I think Mr Kumble is a great player. A good man, a good captain, a strong leader, a great bowler, and an extremely good lower order bat.

Tendulkar is another, a true gentleman, like his captain.

And Dravid likewise.
