Canberra Climate Change group SEE-Change is organising a campaign to reduce the Eco-footprint of 3 Belconnen suburbs by 30% over the next three years.

The suburbs of Macquarie, Cook and Aranda (in which Climate Change Convener Bob Douglas lives) have been randomly sampled for ecological footprint by students from Lake Ginninderra and Hawker Colleges. The results of those surveys will be presented today at a community meeting at the Aranda Primary School Hall at 2pm. At the meeting the SEE-Change group will also be urging resident to join them in action in reducing their eco-footprints and joining others like the suburb of Farrer in demonstrating the importance of climate change to the community.

For the initiated Eco-Footprint is the area of biologically active land and water that we each need to provide us with essential food, clean air, drinkable water and all of the things we use, as well as to process our waste. About half of humanity’s footprint relates to carbon dioxide emissions. The ecological footprint is a scientifically validated measure that can be measured across populations and over time.

Your eco-footprint can be estimated using tools like This one, or duck along to the meeting today Sunday August 5 at ARANDA PRIMARY SCHOOL HALL, at 2PM or for more details bob can be reached on 0409233138 or at bobdouglas@netspeed.com.au

Apathy and ineptitude? Now I see where the ACT govt fits in.

It’s very clear that there’s no use in sitting around waiting for someone else to fix these problems. HUGE congratulations, and thanks, to those who are willing to take the initiative. Go for it.

i believe that it is called apathy and ineptitude sepi.

There’s always a reason not to do something worthwhile if you think hard enough.

I can’t believe I never thought of Andrew Dolt. (A toxic, toxic man if you haven’t had the pleasure of reading his rants)

I take comfort in the fact that Ralph is here to remind us of Johnny’s true view of environmental issues – keep up the good work son.

Every journey starts with a single step Ralph. Societal changes such as this one are best done by people cleaning up their own nest first.

not quite true ralph, its probably closer to 0.000000000000000000000001 tonnes. It is still however making that slight difference.

As they say, a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.

Take:

Optimistic 30% reduction in carbon emissions from 3 canberra suburbs,

+ over 3 billion chinese and indians with growing incomes and energy use,

gives estimated reduction in global carbon emissions:

= 0.000000000000000000000000 tonnes

Estimated feelgood factor for green ideologues:

Priceless.

Wait – Ralph’s a magic act? I thought he was Andrew Dolt’s ventriliquist dummy.

And ladies and gentlemen may I introdcuce the amazing ralph! Combining illogic and ignorance to amaze and stupify.

Repent, carbon sinners.

This should keep the climate change devil at bay!

This is a sensible initiative. Here as in America our designated national leaders are showing no leadership. Dropped the ball. In the US over 500 local authorities (States, cities, towns) have made their own commitments on climate, leaving George Bush waaay behind. In Australia, local groups are doing similar things, like this one working on their community’s ecological footprint. In ten years time we’ll look back and see these guys as the trailblazers (though a few RiotACT regulars may poopoo the thought now, in the blissful ignorance of 2007).
