The January Backanalia

There were a lot of things I missed about Canberra in my year at the coast.

The Front, turkish pizza, zierholz beer, Ethiopian curries, original music and decent kebabs to name just a few.

But the Backyard Backanalias were the thing I missed the most. Four hours of raucous music in good company with cheap beer (BYO beer in the new era) followed by campfire singalongs deep into the night.

Having missed a year’s worth I was then foiled in this season by a series of mishaps involving weather, Margaret, and picking my brother up from the airport.

On Saturday night, finally, I got my backanalia fix back, and it was worth the wait.

As usual it was an eclectic crowd of all ages crammed into an Ainslie backyard. As the night went on the very old and very young headed home leaving the average age somewhere in the mid 30s.

Saturday hadn’t been warm and the night got cold but three firebins and the option to dance seemed to keep everyone warm.

It was also one of the last public performances by the much loved Cashews. Alison and Dan are heading to the bright lights of South East Queensland. If you’re after a last Cashews fix you can check them out at the Fringe Festival as well as a farewell finale at the Corinbank Festival.

The video below gives a taste of the music on offer last night during the official program. Looking back there was a bit of a country feel which isn’t totally indicative of the sort of music you can expect.

There will be more Backanalias (they’re generally held each month through the warmer part of the year). If you’d like to experience them you’ll need to join the Canberra Musicians Club

[Disclosure: The Fringe Festival, Corinbank, and the CMC are all advertisers on RiotACT, but I’d advise against reading much into that.]

As a one-off event like an engagement or a 30th birthday I wouldn’t mind if the neighbours had a party like this, but I think once a month is too much.

I just wonder if we were even looking at the same video, peanut. It seems pretty mellow to me.

So it’s ok if it’s coming from somebody’s stereo, but not if it’s live? Many people live responsibly in a community yet still wish to throw a party every so often.

Nope didnt say that either, loud booming stereos feature just as highly in my list of neighbourhood annoyances, as do lawn mowers at antisocial hours. There are parties and parties, if they intrude loudly and/or late then they are inappropriate.

Afraid I’m with Margaret here – gigs are lovely but not in someone’s back yard where you can get up the noses of neighbours who may not share your taste in music, might be sick, might have kids they want to get to sleep, may have visitors of their own. It’s all part of living responsibly in a community.

you’re a troll.

I would with due respect suggest otherwise. Trolls enjoy stirring up lots of noise, this poster in stark contrast seems to value peace (which is anathema to the trollish race). Also isn’t calling someone names a form of trolling?

Perhaps if you had access to RealitySkin’s full posting history you’d have a clue?

Not Hicks.

Pandy the best form of moderation I ever saw was at the Turner Bowling Club.

Funny how attacking the man gets you in to the moderation list. But not if the topic is close to your heart.

*$#&*$# that, if that was next door to me, i’d be spewing as well.

Sure, but you’re a troll.

Noise. I hate it.

Well I can certainly see what Margaret-soon-to-be-from-the-better-part-of-Ainslie was so concerned about … the happily frolicking kids and dogs just about say it all really ….
