The land commander to campaign against Gary Nairn - COMPLETELY UNTRUE

The ABC has the unexpected news that Major General Mike Mark Kelly (ABC has his name wrong, he’s currently on the ADF’s leaders page), currently the land commander of the Australian Army is going to run against the Liberal’s little loved Gary Nairn in next door’s Eden Monaro.

Looks like the Liberals will need to wheel out Peter Cosgrove sooner than expected.

UPDATED: It would appear the first story was complete arse, well done ABC Sunday monkeys. A new story (presumably more accurate than the last) reports that it is Colonel Mike Kelly (of AWB fame) who is running. Our sincere apologies to Major General Mark Kelly.

Gary Nairn was on 666 this morning going on about how undemocratic it was that Labor was parachutinga celebrity into the electorate and poor Kel Watt – he must be devastated….

Was quickly shoved back in his kennel as Kel Watt rang in and said “disappointing but ce la vie and by the way Gary Nairn was parachuted into the seat himself!”

And I was waiting for someone to talk about Pru Goward’s drop into Goulburn but it didn’t get mentioned.

The problem with being a hypocrite Gary Nairn, is that unlike some in the media, there are always people out there with memories that stretch beyond 3 years…

Might be worth updating the headline, though — although it’s completely untrue that the Land Commander is running, the fact that Mike Kelly is running is a pretty big story in itself and probably deserves its own headline…

There must have been one hell of a enticement to get a colonel to enter federal politics… perhaps the promise of a defence portfolio ?

Sammy the Name of the Major General (clearly identified by his position in the first story) is Mark Kelly.

And pop the correct rank in as well.

johnboy, you might wanna STRIKE the correct name in the story above.

Did anyone see the ‘star’Labor recruit for Boothby in SA on the news tonight. She couldn’t string two sentences together and had no idea what she was talking about.

I think in some cases the Labor party is putting ‘star’ status above ability to perform the job.
Who’s next? Bec Cartwright??

It’s actually Colonel Mike Kelly — the ABC has the updated story here:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200704/s1909308.htm

He was ” seconded to the coalition provisional authority in Iraq in 2004 and told the Cole Inquiry that he had regularly warned the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade about AWB’s behaviour.” (ABC)

I hear last week (off the record) that Andrew Beaumont (the current Labor pre-selected candidate for Eden Monaro) was very worried about being shafted. Looks like it’s almost offical now.

Nice of the ABC to get his name right.

His name is Mark Kelly not Mike Kelly.
