The Libraries want to help with homework

Libraries ACT are making a mad scramble for relevance with eResources for students:

“Libraries ACT is bringing the library to the students, whether that be at home or somewhere else, and connecting them with primary sources and quality information in all school subject areas,” Vanessa Little, Director, Libraries ACT, said today.

“Libraries ACT’s eResources will help reduce frustrating and time-consuming internet searches by taking students straight to the sources they’ll need for their homework and assignments, including local and overseas newspapers, full text journals and fact sheets.

“What’s more, parents will be better placed to support their children and their education needs.”

Ms Little said that every ACT resident with a Libraries ACT membership card, has access to the multitude of free eResources offered on the Libraries ACT website.

Winning the hearts of the teachers deciding what’s an appropriate reference might be where this war is won.

I’m not sure I understand. Why does Johnboy need the libraries to be on the way out?

They’re competition? It’s a meme? Received wisdom?

(For whatever it’s worth, I use them and like them just fine.)

So do I. The ACT library system is so much better than the one’s I used to use in NSW.

Funny, I don’t recall saying that libraries are free. Anyway the marginal cost to borrow a book is zero (discounting the onerous cost of strolling down to the library to get it if they don’t have it as an ebook).

Thanks anyway but Calibre automates the process for me.

And you might want to have a look at eBooks.

Unless you are pirating them ebooks still cost money.

To be fair, a service to give kids access to some good, relevant journals is both a good thing and something that Google doesn’t give you. You can use google to find good articles, what this gives is a tunnel through the pay wall.

^ Therefore I commend ACT Libraries taking a proactive approach.

Libraries ACT are making a mad scramble for relevance.

Pardon? I can only think of two things that will kill off the library:

1. People stop reading books.
2. Publishers start giving books away for free.

Not sure I want to live in a society where #1 has happened, #2 is never going to happen.

3. People no longer require good research techniques

Libraries are still relevant if one values quality research. Librarians, in my view, are more important than ever considering the quality of research and examination standards which are slipping by the day at all levels of education and research.

Librarians can offer a lot, but it’s just like the 1st of the AA 12 steps: you have to admit you have a problem.

For mine this looks like “please don’t use google”.

And you might want to have a look at eBooks.
