Woden town centre at midday today. The saturated green of the trees. The acres of concrete since the pool was filled in.The metal sculpture that probably symbolises something profound although it’s not my thing. The vermin defacing it that didn’t think that someone might be taking a happy snap of their doings in broad daylight.

I’m sure their parents are proud.

Yes, Poetix, I am [was last night] very angry about this situation. Sorry about the oopsies, spell check was also goofing it up for me.
Still, in the first 42 comments, only 4 people spoke against these brats, whilst the rest went on about the lack of development and political issues – some even made excuses for the graffiti artists, blaming it on politicians. Had these almost teens assaulted someone, would the majority on this forum pretend it was the fault of television, for giving the lids instruction on how to go about it and how easy it is to evade the law? Had it been armed robbery at knife-point, would you just say “The poor darlings have just been raised by bad parents, they don’t know any different, it’s not their fault.”?
Defending bad behavior, or doing nothing about it, will not make a better future for our world. Laws are not to be broken and they are there for the protection of people and property. More police with better powers to enable enforcement of those laws is what is needed. Don’t just ignore the problem, it will only get worse.

You want an island that’s 20 behind everywhere else? How about Tasmania?

Again, I re-iterate that what is being done on this forum by you “young-uns” only emphasizes the problem we have with our society. According to all of you crime is okay to do, as long as it doesn’t affect you personally. RESPECT, is missing from our society. Respect for ones property, respect for people themselves and respect for the English language apparently. Call me old, old fashioned, archaic, extremely libertarian [though I vote Labor], but you will never see my kids defacing property or mugging you as you withdraw cash from an ATM. If all you of you critics, who deny these cretins deserve a little discipline, are even ten years my younger, I am ashamed and consider myself of the previous generation, where love and respect were part and parcel of the peace pipe and anti-war semantics. Honestly, you deny that wrong-doing deserves punishment and in the same breath want something like “gay marriage” because it is the right/fair/equal thing to do? So much wrong with that argument.
I’m not even half a century, but apparently old-fashioned. What’s wrong with that if it upholds some skerrick of moral values which diminish with every month that goes by. So, according to you, your sentence was supposed to be the equivalent of:

‘Society has collapsed into a sad, sad state and all I want to do is get away from it and it is crassness.’

That is terrible. You obviously meant society and its crassness and are making it worse by denying it.

I have been called many things, but never illiterate. I’ll send back the PhD in English forthwith.

Also, I’m not young, and believe that defacing sculptures is not to be encouraged. None of which has anything to do with gay marriage. I am not enamoured with all aspects of our society, but I refuse to adopt the position that everything was better in the past.

By the way, it should be one’s property. There is an apostrophe there. Your anger is not helping your punctuation.

Did not know souls bar closed. Sucks I guess when bars and pubs close, but maybe they should have cleaned there lines every now and then and opened up on the weekends.

The Soul Bar had THREE different leases off three different landlords; one for the bar area, one for the outside area in the square and one for the rear beer garden. The beer garden area was a public liability nightmare with extensive pavement damage by tree roots. Initially Doma were going to do something about it but nothing has happened.

Has the Soul definately closed ? Not just closed temp for a bit of refurb or sumthin ?

The owner CSL Pubs was put into liquidation December 3. RSM Bird Cameron are handling it.

That doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t open again, technically Ziggys Market Fresh has been in liquidation for months and their Fyshwick Markets store is certainly hasn’t missed a beat. There’s all sorts of tricks. But if the place is in the state some suggest, then more likely they’ll just let the liquidation take its course.

Yes, they went broke. I believe the business in the hands of receivers but not sure which ones.

Now in the Crimes, Josh Gray, owner of Durham Castle Arms, Kingston is complaining that his business is going broke. He goes on to say that his establishment is looking tatty, he has had to lay off staff and has asked the landlord for a rent reduction. He firstly blames the ACT government’s licensing costs but then goes onto blame punters having a drink in the safety of their own homes rather than coming to his establishment where they could be ‘supervised’.

The evidence can speak for itself.

Indeed. Weak circumstantial evidence places Greens Senate candidate at the scene of graffiti which does not mention The Greens. He was at the scene some unknown time after the graffiti was created. Mr Sheikh was not wearing anything identifying him as a Greens member or candidate, though he was invited in that capacity. In numerous photographs of the protest event, no Greens banners were visible. The protest was not organised by The Greens. Greens MLA and ACT Minister Shane Rattenbury and former MLA Amanda Bresnan also photographed at the protest, and neither was wearing any visible Greens insignia.

You’re not a lawyer, are you?

The protest was outside the ACT Labor conference. I think I’ll blame them – we’ll call it deliberate sabotage to undermine their opponents, knowing there was to be a protest there that day. There’s as much credible evidence for my claim as there is for yours that it’s The Greens’ fault.

The graffiti does display rhetoric which can be attributed to the socialist ideals held by The Greens. It’s one thing for people with placards to stand around someone. The politicians assistants will usually choose a position to avoid those placard wavers, however, they are not idle, they can move around whenever the press are nearby.

Where as, there is a choice in being able to position yourself in front of graffiti on a permanent structure. There are advisers.

Nope.
So long as the Greens offer a safe haven for refugees from the Marxist/Leninist past with histories of active collaboration with the enemy, they can never occupy any adult political space.

Your post should have come with a health warning – I nearly choked on my beer at the suggestion that the Liberals or Labor occupy an “adult political space”.

I have no idea what enemy you are referring to. In recent years both Labor and Liberals seem to think it’s East Timor. Very adult of them.

I take it you are saying that some pro-Greens something (poster? sticker? graffiti?) appeared after this protest march, which wasn’t organised by The Greens. Is it that hard to actually say what you mean?

I have examined closely the photo you linked to, and there is no mention of The Greens. I think you must be confused. The symbol A within a circle means “anarchy” I think, and The Greens are not an anarchist party. I don’t know what the other squiggle means – it looks like it may be a variation on the anarchy symbol.

Simon Sheikh is in one of the photos standing near the graffiti but there’s a TV camera and a photographer nearer still. Are we going to accuse the cameraman and photographer of the graffiti now?

So now that you yourself have established that you are talking shite, here’s a little lesson in politics:
In my opinion The Greens occupy the political space that Labor used to maybe 20 or 30 years ago. But Labor have drifted so far to the right, and the Liberals and Nationals have had to stay ahead of them, that there is now only one major party that gives a toss about anything but forming government. Everything else is secondary. Locking people up for life in concentration-camp-like conditions? Yep, no problem, if it gets us a vote.

Of course the right-left uni-dimensional view of politics is too simplistic. Some Labor policies remain a little left-wing, and sometimes the Liberals and Nationals seem to cherrypick policies from the left too.

IP

I should also mention that in the linked the-riotact article, it also features a slideshow, of which one of the images appears to show the former candidate Simon Sheikh standing in front of the graffiti while presenting a speech.

They are learning this behaviour from far-left extremists. Such as the socialist faction of The Greens.

And of course, you’ll have evidence to show it was the ALP or tories faking political action to blame the Greens?

Of course, it could also have been polar bears disguised as aliens whilst masquerading as greens supporters. But sadly I don’t have any evidence to prove that either.

I have posted a link to an article in which a senior conservative politician admitted her husband engaged in such deceptive activities. I could probably post a few more, but I don’t feel like doing all that work to convince people who don’t seem to be politically conscious. Anyone who denies it occurs must be new to Australia. It’s quite common in the puerile world of adversarial politics inhabited by the Labor and Liberal parties (much less so amongst the Nationals I think, but I might be wrong).

So you’re suggesting that the Young Liberals infiltrated the Greens and vandalised a public artwork during a political rally?

The mindset of your average Fine Arts student/Greens/Socialist Alliance member is that the world is their platform for protest. Your average Young Lib/Lab would just heckle or even try to pick up the free and easy art student types.

Well, perhaps the original claim might be backed up with some description of what “defacing” took place. If it wasn’t there before a Greens rally and was there after, then I think their assumption is reasonable.

If it just appeared one day, then who knows who put it there. Just because it might have said “Vote Greens” doesn’t mean that some dirty trickster didn’t do it. I don’t even know if it was graffiti, or a poster or a sticker, because the original allegation was so vague.

Your additional allegations against Greens members are just diatribe. Trolling even. Good luck getting anyone to take the bait. Not me. Maybe it’s because I don’t have a Fine Arts degree and have never been a member of the Socialist Alliance, but am a Greens member.

We shouldn’t be blaming these kids. They are only doing what The Greens did when they defaced the same public artwork with graffiti during Simon Sheik’s election campaign speech with the “no borders” graffiti.

not to mention demolishing the Alexander and Albemarle Buildings. whatever happened to this project?

Doma Group received development approval back in early 2012 to demolish the two buildings and replace them with A-grade office towers.

According to their website, they intended to start this year, I’d say that target is kaput. http://www.domagroup.com.au/developments/commercial?property_id=345&property_status=current

Meanwhile opposite those two buildings where currently there’s just an expanse of asphalt is Section 9 which is intended to be the high density residential and street level commercial infill. That’s intended to liven up that end of Woden and create a promenade linking to Corinna St. Not sure where that’s at.

It’s a truly horrible place. As much as I think these little shits deserve to be in the stocks, the architects and designers who make these inhuman spaces deserve it much more.

Hopefully the Westfield redevelopment and the bulldozing of Woden Interchange and the former cop shop will bring about a change for the better. Woden Town Square has always been an ugly wind tunnel. Not even the removal of the notorious fountain (which always had empty cans and other rubbish floating in it) brought about an improvement.

What that end of Woden needs is urban infill, and if the nimbys would stop protesting it and the developers could get their finances in order, it might liven up the place 7 days a week.

They can’t get finance until they can demonstrate profit on the project, which won’t happen whilee we have so many unit blocks underway and being finished off. I know of a number of development projects that have been cancelled because the numbers didn’t stack up at the financing stage.

This is all part of a stagnant property market. Soon it will be time for savvy purchasers to go shopping.

You are on the money with the wind tunnel comment. I was there, in the square, on Wednesday arvo. I know it was a windy day but the wind going through the square was something special.

We need to get some CSI enhancement on that image that takes 20 secs and chuck it in a database and his face will no doubt come up as a hit.

that’s how it works right?

I hope you sent that reported that and uploaded the photo here….

https://act.crimestoppers.com.au/help-solve-crime/crime-stoppers-information-report

You can do it anonymously of course, but it would be better if you were prepared to go to court if necessary to give evidence of when you took the photo

It certainly is a dead part of town. The Soul Bar went broke and closed its doors in the last couple of weeks and Oxygen coffee bar is changing name and relocating to Deakin. I hear 1800 staff (from where?) are about to start work in the MLC building, but it could be too little, too late. DOMA were supposed to be redeveloping the building behind the Commonwealth Bank building, but work came to a halt and has been boarded up for some time.
Is it time to return to police foot patrols in the area?

None of that would make it any more busy on a Sunday. And on a weekday it’s a very busy part of town. So what’s your point?
