The little buggers might get braver but they don’t get any smarter

Woden town centre at midday today. The saturated green of the trees. The acres of concrete since the pool was filled in.The metal sculpture that probably symbolises something profound although it’s not my thing. The vermin defacing it that didn’t think that someone might be taking a happy snap of their doings in broad daylight.

I’m sure their parents are proud.

It certainly is a dead part of town. The Soul Bar went broke and closed its doors in the last couple of weeks and Oxygen coffee bar is changing name and relocating to Deakin. I hear 1800 staff (from where?) are about to start work in the MLC building, but it could be too little, too late. DOMA were supposed to be redeveloping the building behind the Commonwealth Bank building, but work came to a halt and has been boarded up for some time.
Is it time to return to police foot patrols in the area?

None of that would make it any more busy on a Sunday. And on a weekday it’s a very busy part of town. So what’s your point?

What that end of Woden needs is urban infill, and if the nimbys would stop protesting it and the developers could get their finances in order, it might liven up the place 7 days a week.

It’s a truly horrible place. As much as I think these little shits deserve to be in the stocks, the architects and designers who make these inhuman spaces deserve it much more.

Hopefully the Westfield redevelopment and the bulldozing of Woden Interchange and the former cop shop will bring about a change for the better. Woden Town Square has always been an ugly wind tunnel. Not even the removal of the notorious fountain (which always had empty cans and other rubbish floating in it) brought about an improvement.

I hope you sent that reported that and uploaded the photo here….

You can do it anonymously of course, but it would be better if you were prepared to go to court if necessary to give evidence of when you took the photo

We need to get some CSI enhancement on that image that takes 20 secs and chuck it in a database and his face will no doubt come up as a hit.

that’s how it works right?

You are on the money with the wind tunnel comment. I was there, in the square, on Wednesday arvo. I know it was a windy day but the wind going through the square was something special.

More human trash.

Did not know souls bar closed. Sucks I guess when bars and pubs close, but maybe they should have cleaned there lines every now and then and opened up on the weekends.

They can’t get finance until they can demonstrate profit on the project, which won’t happen whilee we have so many unit blocks underway and being finished off. I know of a number of development projects that have been cancelled because the numbers didn’t stack up at the financing stage.

This is all part of a stagnant property market. Soon it will be time for savvy purchasers to go shopping.

Doma Group received development approval back in early 2012 to demolish the two buildings and replace them with A-grade office towers.

According to their website, they intended to start this year, I’d say that target is kaput. http://www.domagroup.com.au/developments/commercial?property_id=345&property_status=current

Meanwhile opposite those two buildings where currently there’s just an expanse of asphalt is Section 9 which is intended to be the high density residential and street level commercial infill. That’s intended to liven up that end of Woden and create a promenade linking to Corinna St. Not sure where that’s at.

We shouldn’t be blaming these kids. They are only doing what The Greens did when they defaced the same public artwork with graffiti during Simon Sheik’s election campaign speech with the “no borders” graffiti.

The Soul Bar had THREE different leases off three different landlords; one for the bar area, one for the outside area in the square and one for the rear beer garden. The beer garden area was a public liability nightmare with extensive pavement damage by tree roots. Initially Doma were going to do something about it but nothing has happened.

Of course you’ll have evidence to up back that allegation?

You know, sometimes political parties fake activity by their opponents to discredit them. That’s usually the Liberals or Labor.

So you’re suggesting that the Young Liberals infiltrated the Greens and vandalised a public artwork during a political rally?

The mindset of your average Fine Arts student/Greens/Socialist Alliance member is that the world is their platform for protest. These people think that defacing public property is OK if you’re trying to get your message across. Your average Young Lib/Lab would just heckle or even try to pick up the free and easy art student types.

I’ve always hated that square, ever since they built Woden Plaza (early 80s, or was it late 70s?). The worst wind-canyon in Canberra. it seems to want to repel any people who venture into it. More trees might help. If they can survive the bogan vandals who seem to be proliferating these days.

Well, in all fairness, mooseheads do need a new generation of clientele. They don’t just grow on trees, you know!

HiddenDragon HiddenDragon 11:27 am 09 Dec 13

Isn’t somebody going to find a Marist connection here? (just sayin’…….)

I assume Civic and other re-generation hotspots around the town are totally graffiti free???
