The locks of Aspen Island. Images of Canberra

This just in from Geoff:

Hi John,

I was a walking in the Autumnal sunshine this afternoon and came across these engraved padlocks on the bridge to Aspen Island (or ‘Carillon Island’ for those who’ve no idea). Some of them are quite recent (as in yesterday) and the oldest dates back to late 2012. I can only assume they’re paying homage to the global phenomena ‘Love Locks’ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_padlocks). I counted a total of eight so we’ve a fair ways to go until we approach the Pont des Arts in Paris or the Ponte Milvio in Rome. Most of them bear the names of the lovers and a date … however there’s at least one cryptic inscription which reads;

C+D=B
Rm 701
28/11/2012

Love to hear reader’s guesses as to the meaning of that one!

Anyways, I took pictures and thought of you (platonically of course) … images attached and 580px wide …

Cheers,

Geoff

@jthommo – thanks mate 🙂

@Ozhair – One of the locks was dated the Sunday 26th May 2013 I took the photos and had presumably been left earlier that day … perhaps the film company set future dates?

Now engraved handcuffs would be an interesting bridge adornment… you could leave one half unlocked and see who you caught 😉

In two minds about this. Sweet thoughts on the part of the lovers, but I really don’t want to see our bridges become encrusted with padlocks like tourist spots in Europe.

Nothing a good pair of bolt cutters can’t cure.

There’s currently an “anthology” feature film shooting in Canberra (A feature made up of related short films) called Locks Of Love, based around the European premise. These may be leftover props from one of the shoots…?

Partner 1 + Partner 2 = Baby
Hotel room where conceived?
Unsure whether date of birth or conception.

Terrific images Geoff. I won’t hazard a guess at the inscription though!
