fat men

In the Canberra Times Claire Low is getting to the bottom of the missing fat men of the “On The Staircase” sculpture.

Director of artsACT David Whitney told Today the missing man was discovered on Monday morning, so the theft occurred some time over the past weekend.

The theft and damage was reported to ACT Policing and officers attended on Monday. They are investigating. This includes a review of closed circuit television footage. However, the surveillance of the artwork was reduced over the weekend because of the Multicultural Festival’s tents.

One hopes future public art is built drunk-proof.

This makes me very sad.

Hope they catch the bastards who did it and put them in the stocks next to the sculpture.

Deref, thank you, you’ve made my day! I thought I was the only bloke in town who wanted the return of the public stocks.

Don’t get your hopes up – aren’t they more likely to allocate a case manager and consult them for their views on what public money can be spent on making them feel better?

Now we are two! 🙂

This reads to me as though the missing man was found. (Although I know that isn’t the case.)

Also begs the question: If the tents are obstructing CCTV operation, why were they set up two weeks in advance of the festival?

Its going to be quite difficult attaching them back on permanently. My suggestion would be to build the fat men using two mild-steel stakes (as legs) which extends at least 40cm into the steps. Then drill holes into the steps, and insert the newly made fat guys with some epoxy.

At first I thought you were describing a way to electrify them. So that the next person that lays a thieving hand on the fat guy – zzzap!

I don’t go into civic much these days but passed this sculpture for the first time last week and went by again today and thought the little dude was missing. Hope he is returned to his place soon.

Why?

building his own park bench?

There are some serious vandals in this town.

Working in the square to the north of Woden Plaza some months ago, noticed some really dedicated mongrel had used what could only have been a battery powered angle grinder to remove the aluminium arm from one of the park benches in this area. This was not an easy task.

Why?

he must have read toooooo much and disappeared altogether…
