The Monster of Loch Burley Griffin?

Inspired by many posts over the years on the RiotACT, I thought it was again time to question what lurks beneath the muddy depths of Lake Burley Griffin. My latest Canberra short story was inspired by three items nominated via social media:

Llloonng Exposures + Clouds + Chilly Canberra Morning

Let me know what you think. Some of the history to this ‘myth’ has been recorded on this very site:

The Monster that ate Canberra

There’s something in the waters

Gunghas gets its Bunyip!

Another good site for local history is:

This site has so much info on Ye Olde Canberry, So many tid-bits and clues to forgotten things in the region.

As far as I know, under them muddy waters, there is a golf course, and I think a horse racing track.

and a cave system that was flooded near black mountain

Nice article here about it: http://www.markbutz.com/Butz%201987%20Karst%20and%20caves%20in%20the%20Canberra%20area.pdf

Worth the read as it provides an interesting view of whats under the water.

Thank you, that was an interesting article. I think (but can’t say absolutely) I have been to the White Rocks mentioned. I saw several cave entrances, but didn’t enter any as I was alone. I took a wrong route, but it was so much more interesting than the route I should have taken, but tough going, scrambling/slithering under thick undergrowth by the river and then the scramble up the white limestone to the top, for the wonderful view over the river. I also plan sometime to visit the mentioned London Bridge.

Thanks all. Great food for thought and potentially future stories!

Not to mention possible remains of the railway bridge over the Molonglo intended to provide the rail link to Melbourne but which was washed out and demolished in the 1929 flood.

bloody good sheep station, ruined!

I think maybe some logs floating beneath the surface have added to the monster myth, isnt there meant to be a bomb shelter underneath the water near the carillion?

Perhaps bones. In 1974 a flood washed some of the Queanbeyan Riverside Cemetery into the lake. More than 60 coffins were washed downstream.
