Murrumbidgee in flood
[First Filed Feb 17, 2010]
The wonderful folk at www.kayakcanberra.com have been out shooting the rapids (and the pictures) in what is usually the somnolent creek known as the Murrumbidgee.

Only after the weekend wrecking deluge it’s a river now!

Burrinjuck is downstream of the Murrumbidgee and you can check it’s storage level here:

Wow. Easy to see how silly folk get themselves washed away…

Friends and I were thinking of putting our kayaks and canoes in the water at Point Hutt and going down to Pine Island on the weekend. Is it safe for amateurs. We’ve done it in the past with blow-up boats and had to carry them over quite a few areas with exposed rocks. Any idea whether we’d be floating over the whole thing this time?

You need to take care at higher levels, the main dangers are logs and trees. It will be more exciting at above 2m on the Lobbs hole gauge then what you describe. My advice would be to wait until it drops around that level before getting out there, chances are by the weekend it will be ok. You can check the river heights here: http://kayakcanberra.com/heights/

Thanks, I knew about that. And I note it is showing Cotter at 100% which I assume means spilling over.

Yeah, cotter is spilling over. All of the water seen in the pictures above is flowing into burrinjuck which will later be released for irrigation in drier times.

There is also this Elders site re all metro dam levels ?
Here is the NSW page, just click on the dam you are interested in.
http://www.eldersweather.com.au/damlevel.jsp?lt=state&lc=nsw
To check other states, just type qld or vic or wa or act – sa etc in the URL bar where nsw is now. tas does not seem to work.

Try this link for info of the dam levels – http://www.actewagl.com.au/water/facts/damCapacity.aspx

Does anybody have photos or info re inflows above our dams ?

Excellent shots thanks! I have some from Clo’s and Southwell’s crossings (on the Molonglo down from the back of the RSPCA). Was very surprised to find the concrete above water level at Southwell’s (on Monday afternoon). The sound of a roaring rapid is good for the soul!

It was at almost exactly the same level on 30/06/2007. It is very rare for it to get this high in Summer, normally a winter thing.

Red Rocks I think, upstream of Kambah Pool.

wow, it’s been a while since I’ve seen the Bidgee like that

I’m curious, where is that location in the top image ?
