The War Memorial is letting us know they’ve put on a show for a breakout group of the Oprah Winfrey jamboree currently enthralling the brain dead:

A group of visitors from Oprah’s Ultimate Aussie Adventure visited the Australian War Memorial today Sunday 12 December.

On arrival at Canberra International Airport this morning, the group was welcomed by Dr Karl James (the Memorial’s Second World War Historian) who took the opportunity of the short coach trip to ANZAC Parade, to provide a history of the Memorial including the Australian American alliance.

His Excellency the American Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich and Mrs Rebecca Bleich joined the visitors in the Commemorative Area to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and pay their respects at the Roll of Honour Afghanistan panel.

Dr Karl James then escorted the group through the Second World War and Post 45 Conflicts galleries before taking them to ANZAC Hall to experience the G for George Lancaster Bomber Striking By Night (sound and light show).

That’s your 15 minutes Canberra.

sigh, why did we spent so much money on her?

– US is currently in a recession
– They’ve got huge levels on unemployment
– Their currency has dropped significantly

The US would be the worst people to invite to Australia.

Yanks have always been the worse people to invite to Australian haven’t they?

Brodburger. That is all.

The average American is quite a patriotic person. If they went to the Australian War Memorial to pay their respects to the fallen (theirs and ours), then that is a good thing.

haha thanks for clearing that up! i had to look at my own post just to make sure you weren’t taking the micky out of my poor grammar.

I fixed that for you.

I need a browser plug-in that prevents me from reading anything involving the word ‘Oprah’.

Probably many of them had husbands or children (or wives) who were or are service personnel. The US is a highly martial society, and servicemen and women are highly respected. So it wouldn’t have been out of place to have US tourists visit the AWB.

Of all of the ways to market Canberra to a bunch of cashed-up middle-aged women, why would you take them to a tomb?

We were at the NGA later today, were told about the visit by a staff member in the shop who we got chatting to. We asked if Oprah’s hoards spent up big and were told “oh no, they all got free gifts”. Grrr!!

surely a trip to mully’s shrine would have been more befitting..?

Damn, you beat me too it…

I assume that visit to the war memorial is to enable them to glorify the Australia / US alliance, and the ultimate sacrifice made by our brave men and women fighting the godless heathens in the war on terror, thus keeping the neocon religious right back in the states happy?

Best part of Canberra to show USian visitors? Surely the NGA would be my first choice, making sure to get them in the sculpture garden during a carillon recital.

They all came to the National Gallery today aswell, only for about an hour though.

The War Memorial is a great museum, but who on earth thought it would be a good idea to bring a bunch of Oprah fans here? Of all of the ways to market Canberra to a bunch of cashed-up middle-aged women, why would you take them to a tomb?

The viewers back in the US will say, okay, that’s one place we don’t need to go to.

Agreed. The War Memorial was an odd place to send them. Surely the National Museum of Australia would have been a better location. With all of its Australiana it would have done wonders in terms of presenting Australia and providing a more “uplifting” experience.

I care just enough to post that I don’t really care enough to be excited.

(Television, the drug of a nation. Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation).

Thank the gods it was only 15 minutes.
