I only started playing Ice hockey last year, having been a field hockey player for most of my life, but immediately I was taken by how close knit the Ice Hockey community is. Myself and my house mate both started playing at the same time, and were both welcomed into the fold by some of the best people we have ever met. At all levels, there is just an amazing love of the sport, and the amount of support that the community gives to each other and to the Canberra Knights is nothing short of astounding. I don’t know of any other sport in the ACT (besides the Brumbies and the Raiders) where you see kids and adults regularly rocking up to training sessions wearing merchandise from their top level Canberra Team.

From the association which does so much to get the official Ice Hockey season up and running, to the coaches who give up their time to help out, to the players who are always willing to grab a beer or have a chat off the ice (no matter what team you play for), and all the supporters of the Canberra Knights – I am proud to be part of this community.

So I thought, what can I do to help out? The answer was obvious really. The Canberra Knights need our support to survive. The particulars can be worked out later, but right now we need donations. The local company I work for, Imagine Team – has recently developed an app that can be used for paying people. What better use than to collect donations from the local community?

We talked to the captain of the Knights, Mark Rummukainen, and he agreed that it was a good idea, and was happy to get on board. All that there is now is to donate! The problem with “my cause” is that the knights only get your donations if the full amount is raised. By using our app QuicklyPay.it, you can donate free of charge, and you know that the money will go to the Knights regardless of whether the target is hit. To put our money where our mouth is, we’ll even donate an extra 2.4% +.30 of every transaction on top of your donation to the Knights.

To donate, download the app from the apple or android store or visit http://quicklypay.it/download from your phone. On the first screen, press the menu in the top left hand corner (it looks like 3 bars on top of each other) then in the menu, select the option “Promo Code”. Use the code “CK2014” without quotes. This will donate $20 to the cause, which you can then use the app to pay. You can also see how many people have donated from inside the app!

Please guys, don’t let this awesome community down. Let’s show everyone that we Aussies play sports because of the camaraderie, the community, and the general love of the challenge. Lets rise to this challenge and show that we can band together and beat the hard times. Lets save the Canberra Knights.

When you say “the problem with “my cause” is that the knights only get your donations if the full amount is raised”, who gets the donations if the full amount is not raised?

Do they go back to the donors or does your company keep them?

They go to the team. If it’s not clear from the post, our aim is not to steal your money. Every dollar counts, and while setting a goal is important, any amount raised can help.

That’s still not clear. Your original post said that the team only gets the money if the entire amount is raised. My question remains – what happens to the donations if the target is not met? And if they go to the team in any case, why did you originally say the opposite? It certainly put me off donating.

Congratulations to the new CBR Brave.

Good job using the latest Canberra promotional brain fart in the name. I wonder if the funding was tied to this?

Strange nickname too. Shouldn’t it be Braves to make it a collective noun? This use of adjectives as nicknames in Australian sport is weird. Add ‘Brave’ to ‘Glory’, ‘Victory’ and ‘Heart’, and the Australian sporting landscape is starting to sound like a motivational breakfast.

On 2CC someone mentioned that the head of the new team is the same person who came up with CBR, hence the incorporation of it into the team name. In any case, why Braves? Teams in the US named Redskins have run into problems with the PC brigade, maybe it will happen here as well.

It’s not “Braves” though mate – that’s the point I was making!

It’s not “braves” as in collective noun – it’s “brave” as in adjective.

Bizarre…

I appear to have exposesd a raw nerve here. How come the ACT Labor Government has forked our $750,000 for “beach volleyball facilities”? The folly of this can only mean it is all about buying votes.
It even trumps Kate Carnell’s futsal slab.

I’m sorry that you don’t have a laptop.

Mordd some of us pay $350 to get the best ice hockey helmets and face protection available. An AGV K3 motorbike helmet is cheaper than that.

…they’ll probably change it to the Canberra Cold Nights (I made that up cos I thought it was a clever reference to ice, as well as still using ‘nights’… and cold nights in Canberra? Come one, that’s pretty clever…).

The players don’t have to buy the license or the team from him.

But they will have to by Canberra Cold Nights off you…

See that Id pay for. At the moment though it still seems to be asking to help pay for someone else’s hobby.

I’ll let them have the name for free. That will be my contribution to a sport that I have very little interest in 🙂

What does the app QuicklyPay.it do that can’t be done with any of the other various payment options.

See this in itself means I’m not going to donate money. We don’t need more and different apps to pay for things and I’m guessing the developers are making money from it to which is ok, but be upfront about the costs etc. Its like chuggers doing stuff under the guise of a charity, but just how much is the chugger and their company getting ….

I’m looking at the website and then see bitcoin and decide I’m staying away from it as well. For every hippy trendsetting bitcoin lover you’ll find plenty who understand the currency is generally too risky.

I think you will find there are more issues to the deaths of Derek, Rick and Wade – these guys were a certain type of player called enforces (Rick Rypien not so much – as he didn’t have the size of the other two). The fighting within hockey argument is as big an argument over in hockey land as the arguments of Cars vs Cyclists here. All I will say is, yes it is a part of the sport – but not so much in the AIHL. There are heavy penalties for fighting in the Australian League.

But having said that, there are head injuries in EVERY sport. You can’t just put contact sports into that broad basket. The only time I have ever been knocked out cold was when I was playing squash! It has even happened in tennis, you have a fall and you hit your head on the surface – it’s that simple.

How much did the ACT government put into the Canberra “American Rounders” team and facilities courtesy of the ACT taxpayer?

I would like the ACT government to sponsor me in the ancient Welsh sport of bog snorkelling, a cool $ half million should see me right.

Sorry I have a policy against supporting sports which result in horrific head injuries for the players, this includes but is not limited to ice hockey, grid-iron and any extreme sport with a high risk of serious injury or death. Im not going to say ppl shouldnt be able to beat others up with hockey sticks, but I am certainly not going to donate money to support it.

Ice hockey players do not suffer horrific head injuries. Where the McFuck did that come from? There are countries where their kids play ice hockey like like Aussie kids play netball or Aussie Rule. Nothing extreme about hockey.

This is why we can’t have an unmoderated forum.

It’s not my argument, I don’t care – but read about Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak before saying hockey players don’t suffer catastrophic head injuries.

Their repeated head injuries were ultimately as catastrophic as it gets.

Trying to ignore or downplay the existence concussions does nothing to boost awareness of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and the severe risks involved in high contact sports. Nor does it do anything to further the sport or those who are involved in the sport if the issue continues to be ignored.

Of course, it’s very likely that AFL and NRL players have or will suffer these injuries – but we don’t know yet. With hockey we do.

So who will own the team? Who gets the money? Im trying to see whats “community” about this.

As I understand it – which is admittedly only from the CT and from one bloke at work who is involved – the previous owner has wound his version of the team up and forfeited his license. The money is for the establishment and upkeep of a new team that will be “owned” and operated by players – so, the cost of the license, player insurance, rink hire etc.

The model is about as “community” as they get in sport.

Despite no longer wanting to operate the team, the previous owner is being a bit of a knob over the name – but as I understand it, he won’t be getting the money unless he demands money for the name. In which case they’ll probably change it to the Canberra Cold Nights (I made that up cos I thought it was a clever reference to ice, as well as still using ‘nights’… and cold nights in Canberra? My understanding is that the only person that wanted to shut down the Canberra Knights was its owner. Why reward the owner with donations? If everyone else wants to stay together, they can reform themselves with a new name and I’d happily donate to that.

The donations are going towards the team not the owner (or previous owner). They are looking at taking over the ownership and running the team themselves. It’s all over the CT and on the FB page mentioned in the original post.

So we are providing money to let a group buy a private asset off another person?

Incorrect. The new team is breaking away from the current owner of the Knights brand. The money that is being donated is to help set up the new team so they can compete within the national league.

This may be a repost as lost internet while posting….

So who will own the team? Who gets the money? Im trying to see whats “community” about this.

I remember when I was at UC (CCAE) in the 1980s a few of the Knights players were students and friends of mine. One also played lead guitar in a band that used to play in the Refectory. They were all Finnish. The player quoted in this article is also Finnish. Is ice hockey big in Finland? I thought it was only big in Canada where it is simply referred to as hockey.

Boozing is big in Finland.
