Young and old clamour for the head of David Furner to be mounted on a pike in Civic Square.

Fortunately for the embattled coach his management have made a statement on the side getting out of dodge with the status quo intact:

The Canberra Raiders will use a week long camp on the Central Coast this week to prepare for their round 14 match against the Knights in Newcastle.

The camp is aimed at bringing the playing group together and working on improving their current position.

Raiders Chairman John McIntyre urged members to stick by the club and the club was just as disappointed with the results as the members are.

“We aren’t happy with the position we’re in at the moment, but I know the coaching staff and playing group are 100 per cent committed to turning things around on the field,” Mr McIntyre said. “This camp is in place for the group to come together and determine why they’re not getting these results and the board and I support the initiative.”

McIntyre also confirmed that rumours and speculation regarding the Head Coach were just that and said David Furner would remain the Coach of the club.

“There has been no board meeting scheduled regarding David Furner’s position and he remains the Head Coach of the Canberra Raiders.”

My standard response to any of my raiders supporting friends (which is most of them) when they bag me out for being a Rabbitohs fan is to simply look at them and giggle.

I’m looking for a team to support in NRL and my mate was telling me about the Souths, the long history and tradition, the local roots, the classic shirt which has hardly changed in over 100 years. At last I thought…a club that isn’t manufactured, with a ridiculous name, and open to being shifted somewhere else.
Then he said their official name was the Rabbitohs. Huh…the freakin’ what?
That drags them back to the level of those blokes who play in pink.

Not sure waht you are getting at? The name is based on the blokes who used to sell rabbits around the streets of Redfern in the early 19th century. Not a Souths supporter by the way

That would be early 1900s

“Those blokes who play in pink”? You mean the Pretoria Bulls in the Super 15 rugby who won the comp in 2010? If the Brumbies could be “dragged … to that level” I – and everybody else in this town – would be very happy indeed. The good news is that with Jake White as coach that is beginning to happen.

Last year the Tigers came down and pumped the Raiders 49 – 12. After that game they talked about reviews and changes. What’s changed?

The Raiders are no longer capable of scoring 12 points

If the club has resorted to this- then it won’t be too long..

Not much. Still too much reliance on Campese, with no alternative main playmaker of NRL standard. With Campese on board and really firing they can dominate anyone, including the Tigers. Without, they are toast.

The giggle slowly turns into uncontrollable, rolling on the floor laughter. Raiders fans have no grounds to rip on anyone these days, even Rabbitohs fans.

Except for the fact that Souths haven’t won a comp since 1971.

And that Souths were kicked out of the competition. At which point all of their fans suddenly came out of the woodwork.

No board meeting scheduled regarding his position… we’ll just wait for the next one we’ve already got scheduled.

There’s an accepted procedure for this type of thing. Following the next board meeting, the Raiders will be able to release a statement confirming that David Furner has the full support of the board. The natural processes that follow that statement can then swing into action.

No board meeting scheduled regarding his position… we’ll just wait for the next one we’ve already got scheduled.

This should be read for what it is….”We copped a flogging so we are going to the beach.”
