Not all superheroes wear capes…

We often wait till Mother’s Day to give deeper thought to the amazing contributions from the incredible women around us. These are the real Wonder Women, the unsung heroes in our everyday lives whose contributions, attitude, kindness and love go a long way in uplifting our existence. We might be so accustomed to their giving nature that we sometimes forget to show appreciation. Whether they’re colleagues, sisters, bosses, daughters, friends, mothers, teachers, aunties, wives, partners, grandmothers or even your next-door neighbour, our lives are that much better because we have them in it.

For this series, I am featuring three of Canberra’s Wonder Women, but please know that this is also dedicated to all the Wonder Women out there, regardless of how little or how much you do for others. Perhaps you know a Wonder Woman or you are one. Either way, this is for them and for you. We see you.

There are those unique women like Jess Condi O’Brien who always like to make people feel appreciated, heard and included. By no means just a people-pleaser, Jess’s values spring from connection, health and wellbeing that motivates her to be a vessel of kindness and positivity to others.

Jess is a graphic designer for ACT Health and like many women, has a couple of side gigs as a freelancer and running a skincare and wellness cosmetics business. Jess loves taking the time out to listen to people’s stories. She says, “everyone’s life experiences are so different to our own, and the same scene may be interpreted differently from person to person, depending on their programming and representation of the world.”

Through everything she does, she’s passionate about encouraging people to realise small positive decisions, which built up over time can lead to phenomenal changes in their life.

Coming from an Italian background, Jess says family is everything to her and this virtue has been instilled from the get-go. Jess and her husband Matt have a gorgeous 18-month-old girl. They make sure she grows up understanding and appreciating the magnificence of nature by taking her to the coast, parks, and animal sanctuaries.

In short, like many of us, Jess’ sphere of life constantly revolves around work, family, business, connecting, raising offspring, the coast and it’s beyond commendable how she infuses so much love and harmony into the process. She has her days, but with a great set of values grounded in wellness, health and peace, she does her best to bounce back into the swing of things.

Her husband, Matt, had this to say about her:
“Jess is the most ambitious, inspiring, caring and positive person I know. She is the most wonderful best friend, lifelong partner and wife I could ever have hoped for, and most importantly she is the most amazing mother to our daughter, Isla! Jess is constantly managing a large range of various work and personal projects. She always manages to successfully complete these with a positive attitude and a big smile on her face. While Jess is very driven to succeed in the corporate and business world, her family and friends are always her number one priority.”

Through her business, she’s collaborated with some not-for-profits to raise funds, generate awareness and support them. With her love for nature, she plans to do something around ocean/nature conservation.

Jess Condi O’Brien reminds us all that there is a lot of wonder within us – no matter what we do or where we come from.

Give some love to the Wonder Women in your life and remember to always make them feel appreciated!
