The rise of the Enviro Scammers

The Canberra Times brings word that predators are amongst the herd when it comes to carbon friendly retrofitting:

ActewAGL is warning customers to beware of scammers promoting energy-saving devices.
An ActewAGL spokesman said its customers were being telephoned with offers of energy-saving devices costing from $160 to $170. The devices, which plugged into a standard power point, were said to save up to 40 per cent of a household’s electricity consumption.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission reports on its SCAMwatch website that scammers are selling plug-in devices with the claim they save large amounts of energy just by plugging them into the wall but the saving never happens.

Fraudulent rebate farmers are another one to watch out for.

Is there a better way to organise this?

For no charge I can pop around and arrange to save you 100% on your electricity bill.

I’ve been meaning to pick up some spare fuses.

Well I don’t know about you non-believers but if the Indian salesperson offers you a Reiki-based energy saver, you can trust it, trust me. But there’s a catch. The Reiki energy-saver it comes with is second rate and not compliant with our southern hemisphere electricity that flows in a counter-voltage position to the northern hemisphere power. So savings are rarely achieved.

However, I can supply quality Australian manufactured and tested Reiki energy-saver for use with these devices. Only $39.95 for a whole year’s supply, and if it doesn’t perform as promised I offer a full 100% money back (credit) guarantee.

Is there anything that Reiki can’t do? Your product catalogue must be thicker than the phone book!

yeah well anything that requires proof that it works or some sort of scientifically provable backing is definitely out, much the same as in the medical charlatan’s world. 🙂

Then there’s the enviro scam where ACTEWAGL ‘neglects’ to put ACT people with PV panels on their roof onto the Feed-in Tariff premium rate, instead only paying them the same rate as the consumption charge. How many people and organisations are falling foul of that convenient little oversight??

Will this work on my horse?

I enjoy having a bit of fun with these guys by seeing just how long you can keep them interested. I use the Fake Name Generator to come up with a credible but bogus set of personal details, including a credit card number, that I then use to place fake orders. As they are usually Indian based call centres, they wouldn’t know Canberra from Canningvale. Frequently they will ring back to verify details and you just give them another set of bogus info.

Love it! 😀

Hilarity will ensue.

Sounds like the scam they’re still advertising on 2CC where you plug something into your powerpoint and pests all disappear.

Oh come on, I have plenty of these wonderful devices to sell. As soon as I’m finished selling this harbour bridge I have I’ll offer you all one for half price. Oh, by the way, I have a great tower in Paris if anyone is interested, superb views from the top. 😉

Better way to organise this = let natural selection ensue.
