Up there with Venice apparently…

With its systems of circular roads, Australia’s capital city regularly traps its visitors in a hamster-wheel spiral of confusion. But there are better ways to get lost here. Head out of the city centre – yes, into the bush. Keep going. There! See those suburbs? That is where the life of the city is going on – including some of its best eating.

Get found: Hooray for GPS! Or go with the traditional Aussie method and ask for directions at a servo (service station).

Back before I knew the city, I made the mistake of thinking I could navigate to the southern end of Tuggeranong from Griffith by following the compass in my car in a generally southerly direction.

Boy, how wrong was I.

Arescarti42, as someone who tried to do the same thing in the north of Canberra when I first got here, I feel your pain :).

But not enough to stop laughing like a loon when I first read your post….you’ve made my day, thank you!

Somebody forgot to mention Brugge, the finest small city in Europe.

I learnt early, follow the streets with the white lines in the centre until you get to an arterial road

There are also some suburbs where loop streets end in loop streets that end in loop streets. I know that once I take a wrong turn there, I might not get out of the maze before my retirement. Though I do still have an old-fashioned street directory in the car.

Seriously! I love Canberra but I agree with Bill Bryson’s view – head into the suburbs and you are faced with lots and lots of houses that all look much the same.

You will see more amazing things in 100m of walking through Varanasi than 15 days of hiking through Canberra (at least if you are a Westerner, which presumably the BBC’s article is aimed at).
