The slave pits of Braddon

The Canberra Times brings word of an alleged sex slave business being run out of Braddon apartments by one 55 year old Robert Phillip Dick (aka “Uncle” or “Bobo”).

Dick’s alleged victim, a young Thai woman, whose identity has been suppressed by the court, told police she was brought to Australia from Thailand on a visitor’s visa and then told she owed Nantahkhum the ”mother of the sex contract” $43,000 which had to be repaid by having sex with men in Canberra for money.

A police statement of facts tendered to the court said that young women were routinely placed on such ”contracts” by trafficking gangs.

These alleged things happen in the strangest and least expected places.

Quote from The CT article:

“Dick’s alleged victim, a young Thai woman, whose identity has been suppressed by the court, told police she was brought to Australia from Thailand on a visitor’s visa and then told she owed Nantahkhum the ”mother of the sex contract” $43,000 which had to be repaid by having sex with men in Canberra for money.”

Come on guys, don’t be so bloody naive. What reason do you think the victim had for coming to Australia in the first place? A free, all expenses paid, holiday in Australia – paid for by some really friendly strangers she just happened to meet in Bangkok?

I would assume that she was either trying to get into Australia as an illegal immigrant, or thought she was going to be paid to work in the sex industry here for a short period of time. Unfortunately, like so many others, she has found out the hard way that these sex traffickers have no scruples or morals at all, and will exploit these women any way they can for their own greedy ends.

I sincerely hope that Uncle Bobo and Nantahkhum get the book thrown at them (although, being Canberra, they’ll probably only get a smack on the wrist!), as this kind of trade needs to be totally killed off. But I think it is important to realise that not all of the victims are completely squeaky clean themselves either.

And DMD, personally I’d rather go without sex at all, then have to pay for the services of a prostitute. I’m sure they’re all really lovely and interesting people, but they’re not the kind of crowd I feel the need to be involved with. Anyway, you disappoint me, as from some of your previous posts on RiotACT, I’m surprise that you haven’t come out with the old feminist rant about most women in relationships being a kind of sex slave anyway!

Without giving oxygen to trolls, the case in point is distressing and abominable. I know very well second-hand of a similar case in the southern suburbs. I think the slime-bag weaseled out of it but at least he was shut down in the premises in question.

Typical. The Govt is stifling small business in this country.

Someone has the get-up and go to bring a skilled migrant worker into Australia, and what happens – they get hammered for it!

I don’t see much humour in sex slavery.

I can laugh at anything.. but even I thought that comment was not worth approving on RA.

But we can all enjoy the illusion of a free press – until a migrant group starts talking about RA on the news as being a bed of insensitive racists who advocate sex slavery.

No one can seriously find the notion of women being forced to have sex for money humourous. Don’t feed the trolls.

It would only be humourous if the pimps made them each install individual eftpos terminals.

Well, you need to get out a bit more often then, don’t you.

Maybe if you use such services you may find it funny. Is that what you mean by get out more, Mr Evil?
