What is THE SLOG?

THE SLOG is a Canberra based professional networking site that will cater specifically to people who are involved in the music industry. Initially it will network different groups by providing an interactive board that promotes gigs at music venues. Once that is up and running effectively, we’ll expand to promote other groups affiliated, such as photographers, those with equipment (in case an amp blows up and you’re 500k’s away), session musos and other services so that bands on the road, or here at home, can get quick access to what they want and need as they want/need it… somewhat like an interactive yellow pages, but one that caters for all in the industry.

Why did you establish it?

Initially to help local musicians get around more easily and make sure more interstate bands would stop by Canberra on their way to other cities. We have a great town with such a broad range of talented musicians and by bring more interstate bands in we can give them more opportunities to play as support as well as gain more exposure with interstate visiting fans. From there ideas kept developing and after doing some research, it became apparent that no one was doing these things despite there being great need.

How can people get involved?

The quote to have our site built by developers is $30,000. To raise money we are making 3,000 A4 wall calendars for 2012 that you can be on! These calendars will be the equivalent of a business card for us, as well as promoting bands/venues/festivals and other people who have services that benefit the music industry. The cost to make the calendars is $7,350. We’ll have some money raised from the people featuring in the calendar, but we still need help!.

Each month will display an image (photo, poster, illustrated design, etc.) of an Australian artist alongside another artist or venue/festival or event (1754 x 2480pixels x 2). Above is a mock-up of the layout, to give you an idea of how it will work. The calendars will be distributed around the country, as well as sent to other establishments, such as Australian themed pubs and bars, over in the UK, USA, Canada and Asia as promotion for you and THE SLOG.

The images will be provided by the artists/venues/other/you and can contain whatever they/you want, so long as it falls under an M15+ rating and RRP will be $20

Here’s a list of the people we already have on board:

See your name missing? Get involved!!

Hi, name’s Jacq and I run THE SLOG.

I’m very excited about launching our website as well as our first annual calendar. At this stage we have plenty of spaces left to fill and I thought you may be interested in preparing next year’s advertising now.

Hi, my name’s Julia and I’m here to spruik THE SLOG and next year’s calendar and the wonderful woman above.

I’ve been the editor of Canberra’s street press, BMA Magazine, for two and a half years and I also manage Canberra pop funk three-piece Fun Machine, so I’ve got my finger on the pulse when it comes to local music and how to get your band off the ground.

Taking out a month in THE SLOG calendar is a brilliant way to advertise nationally and also align yourself with an iconic music venue. I couldn’t recommend it more.

Cheers guys,

Julia Winterflood

Hey guys – has SLOG got any association with the Music ACT thing that’s currently being established?

Yes and no. I’m on the board for Music ACT which means getting to see some amazing people with more experience and knowledge do their magic, but THE SLOG is a separate project that will run Australia wide 🙂
