The ACT Emergency Services Agency is currently receiving calls from the public concerned about the presence of smoke over Canberra.

The smoke is coming from a fire at Araluen, south of Braidwood, in NSW.

There are currently no fires burning in the ACT.

Araluen is a lovely town. I hope there was not too much damage in the area.

Is Araluen growing again? It once had a population of 60,000 but was pretty much just the pub when I was last there. With Braidwood’s gentrification, I guess tree-changers could be heading to Araluen as well!

Too many zeroes in that population.

Yes, one too many! 4,000 in the valley and many more a little way into the hills.

Oh and about a thousand Chinese in the valley who weren’t counted …

During the gold rush IP. I recall reading somewhere about the phenomenal number of police stations in the valley. Another Rioter might be able to find a source…

There’s a great wind map on http://earth.nullschool.net which can show very neatly what is happening. Some of the smoke is also coming from Victoria.

Yea its not bad that for a fun thought experiment using a super computer and has potential if they can plug in a lot more local inputs. So when you zoom in to a place it then adds in the extra data inputs but thats very difficult because how can you then adjust the global model. Its not accurate at a local level its all based on MSL pressures and have a look at the wind speeds on some of the lows around Antarctica way to low I can say that from experience.

Yes, Shauno’s measurements are more accurate than BoMs.

Any chance you can share your published data, Shauno? Or is this yet more personal delusion?

We need a blimp in the sky with live cams so we can watch the goings on around the area from the comfort of our lounge chairs.

Well thanks for that note. Woke up after a small zzz, had a squiz out the window, and thought what the hell.
