The ten days of Canberra

Forget the 12 days of Christmas, and forget an incompetent dictatorial local government with delusions of grandeur.

The Chief Minister has decreed that there shall be ten days of feasting and celebrations to celebrate the immensely significant landmark of Canberra’s 94th Birthday.

This will be one of the biggest ten days in recent history, with more than 30 events taking place around Canberra to celebrate the day this city was named

Does anyone recall a bigger ten days in recent history?

Oh and should I be kicking myself for never having heard of “Los Chavos” or “Nude Antz”.

Well they do have this dedicated office, don’t they:

Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

Welcome to the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Website

The Office provides strategic advice to the Chief Minister on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the ACT. The Office coordinates a whole-of-government approach to issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents and provides secretariat and administrative support to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Consultative Council and the United Ngunnawal Elders Council.

This from a government that supposedly has the interests of Aboriginal people at heart – when have they ever said that ?

I’m sure it’ll have gotten a mention in the internationally acredited bill of human rights as signed by the interior ministry of independent Canberra, but I hope nobody actually bothered to print that document, as the paper it is printed on is worth more.

The ACT Government has no accountability to the Indigenous Inhabitants of the Canberra region, solely on the basis that they were handed responsibility against their will by an overarching power. They cannot be held responsible for something they did not ask for afterall ?

Anyone fortunate enough to live in Brisbane, or even visit Brisbane in 1988 would remember that great celebration of our 200 years as a Nation (Colony), World Expo 88. Indeed, even Sydney had celebrations at the time (some thing involving boats I recall).

Surely the 94th aniversary of the conversion of a sheep farm into our nations capital (Because Sydney didn’t want it in Melbourne and Melbourne didn’t want it in Sydney) ranks right up there with our other great celebrations that brought the nation together.

“I will recognise Canberrans who have lived here for 50 years or more with the Canberra Gold Chief Minister’s Awards.”

So says the Chief Munster.

And yet, I see no mention on his media release of any event that relates to our Indigenous folk: who’ve certainly been here more than 50 years. Correct me if I’m wrong.

is it true that Los Chavos is spanish for “mexican bogan”?

I do hope this event will be carbon neutral.

10 days of feasting to celebrate the 94th anniversary of “naming day”?

We really do live in pissweak world sometimes.

Perhaps “nude antz” will join “nude horses” at the top of the puzzling RiotACT referrals list?

I did a bit of googling and discovered the Nude Antz are playing a gig at Holy Grail sometime. One gig, only three mentions I found of them.

Los Chavos don’t appear to have a net presence at all, or else it’s too hidden by all those Spanish sites and myspaces out there. Perhaps it’s really Los Capitanes?

I think the “Celtic Moon Festival” in Tuggers is most appropriate.

The Celts, of course, were here long before the so-called Aboriginal fellas.

In fact, it is not well known that they left here many eons ago to conquer and settle far-off places such as Brittany, Wales and Cornwall.

In bark canoes. And it was the Celtic moon that guided them across the seas.

Thus the timely festival.

How about the 5 days leading up to the 2003 fires, and the 5 days after they hit?
