Canberra 100 are noting that today marks the start of the 1,000 day countdown to the centenary of Canberra:

In 1000 days we will be partying like there’s no tomorrow. Except there will be a tomorrow. In fact there will be, at very least, another one hundred years for this city to go on being an incubator for the nation in so many ways – and that’s why the way we are preparing for the centenary celebrations in a very particular way.

It’ll feel like no time at all.

Funny that they replaced the logo with something more “stylish”… and not locally designed.

It is odd. I also think much of the country is going to find the thought of 100 Canberras somewhat off-putting.

I predict that the slogan for Canberra’s bicentenary will be something like this:

?????????????????????????????????????

well, we’ll have to wait a thousand days and a hundred years for that…

😉

Interesting that the booklets launched today have surprisingly little on Burley Griffin. A whole book devoted to the surveyors, another to Australia’s federation and yet only a few paragraphs about Griffin. Much of this looks at Griffin’s social views more than anything. It even suggests that Griffin was really similar to Australian colonists in how he grew up in Chicago… yeah.
Also barely a mention of Marion Mahony Griffin who was just as instrumental in the plans for Canberra as her husband. Hope they release something more to recognise his work… and recognise how authorities screwed him over in the 1920s.

Hmmm…so I guess we can’t do chinese characters.

I actually typed a very witty comment in Chinese script.

It had something to do with being happy about unifying with the motherland, or we will park a tank on your family.

Unless of course my Mandarin is not as good as I think it is…

read the headline, thought Obama might have scheduled his visit

Gee, one thousand days until our big party! Isn’t it exciting – not. I remember attending the Canberra Beer Belly Championship at Australia Park (Canberry Fair) in 1988 during the Bicentennial. Didn’t attend any events during the Centenary of Federation, if in fact there were any. I wonder what wonderful events Canberra’s 100 will bring? The Wiggles at Stage 88? Another Al Grassby statue or SIEV-X memorial? I think I’ll be avoiding this particular celebration.

We’re an incubator? I thought the nation came first, rather than the capital…

But I’m still confused as to who is the chicken and who is the egg in this metaphor… it’s not so much a mixed metaphor as a blended one…

Can they replace the water usage signs with the countdown?
