Shane Rattenbury spreading the word on swimming spots around Canberra now the hot weather is hard upon us:

“Renovated in 2010, Casuarina Sands is a great place to relax and have a picnic, with barbecue facilities, shelter, drinking water, picnic tables and toilets. After a swim in the river take a stroll upstream to the historic pumping station.

“A long-time family favourite, Pine Island, is the main recreation area along the Murrumbidgee River in south Canberra, conveniently located adjacent to Tuggeranong. The island features three separate barbeque areas with picnic tables and toilets, a playground, and a series of swimming holes and beaches to enjoy.

“Kambah Pool is a popular swimming spot with picnic tables, toilets and walking trails. Take a swim and then enjoy a hike along the Murrumbidgee River to Casuarina Sands or Pine Island.

“Tucked within a bend where Cotter River meets Paddys River is Cotter Bend. Enjoy a picnic on the grass, read a book under a large shady tree or enjoy a swim along the meandering river. Cotter Bend has barbecue facilities, picnic tables, drinking water, toilets and is wheelchair accessible. After a refreshing swim you could take the short drive to Tidbinbilla to enjoy the range of food and drink on offer at the new Cafe Tidbinbilla which is open 9 am to 4 pm from Wednesday to Sunday.

“Another local treasure is the Tharwa Sandwash. Located in a bend in the Murrumbidgee River, the area has a calm, sandy and open stretch of river which is suitable for swimming, kayaking and water play. There is also 128 species of birds which are known to inhabit this space of only two hectares. Upgraded in 2010, the area has new facilities and paths.

“Looking for a swimming spot you can enjoy with your dog? Take your dog for a swim and a play at Uriarra Crossing, which has both on-lead and off-lead exercise areas. Uriarra is a great place to have a picnic with tables, shelter, toilets and barbecue facilities available.”

Goosepig and I took the hounds for a swim at Uriarra Crossing a few weeks ago and it was pure win. Follow the signs to the reserve though, not the crossing.

I wish the lord mayor would provide road access from West Belco down to the river.

Where exactly? The river near the sewerage treatment works? Yep that would be a great place for a swim.

Or a road to Ginninderra Falls? If the falls then the road actually exists, the “problem” is the falls are accessed through private land, and on top of that that land is a few km’s into NSW so not much the lord mayor as you so put it could do.

Easier solution is to move down South

none of those places have public art and aren’t known to tourists

This will save you having to send your kiddies to a school swimming carnival, go throw em in the river.

Uriarra’s my favourite. When there’s water in the river. And unfortunately the trees on the little peninsula got washed away in the floods. But we have a new fave spot now that is more private and better for swimming.

When we don’t want to drive that far, we go to Black Mountain Peninsula. It’s a good spot, though could do with more shade and there are no dogs allowed there.

You swim in LBG? Ewww…

I’m a Canberran and I’d never heard of the Sandwash before – I’d like to go and see what it’s like, but buggered if I’m going to follow the river until I find it.

When you are driving over the Tharwa bridge, stop the car when you are half way over. Look to your left and right. See all that sand? That is the amazing Tharwa sandwash. Just saved you the disappointment. I think that flyer was written by a used car salesman … or worse … a real estate agent!

Just plug them into your own gps der!

Google map term search:
– Tharwa Sandwash: http://goo.gl/maps/CMCzX (say what now?)
– Cotter bend: http://goo.gl/maps/NPmHe (yay, swimming on the road!)
– Pine Island: http://goo.gl/maps/Pg2Cx (the first remotely sensible result)

The others come up ok, but I stand by my original statement. I’m a Canberran and I’d never heard of the Sandwash before – I’d like to go and see what it’s like, but buggered if I’m going to follow the river until I find it.

Careful of what you advise, ’cause some of us are still using Apple Maps.

It could end up in skinny dipping with crocs…

In memory of our dear friend Jivrashia, last seen crossing the Nullarbor on their way to Kambah Pool…

I see he is declining to state where there are bins… I’ve been for a few picnics down at Pine Island over the last couple of months, in each case there is not a bin to be found… Whilst we know now that we need to bring a bin bag with us, I would have thought that was a pretty standard thing that would be supplied where there are BBQ’s…

Obviously too much effort to provide a map with the media release…

Just plug them into your own gps der!
