Chief Minister Stanhope has the ominous news that you’ll no longer be able to pretend Christmas isn’t coming when the Giant Christmas Tree lights up in Civic Square amongst gala celebrations on 3 December.

“Christmas in the City is Canberra’s official Christmas celebration, and as it is in many of our homes, the festivities will kick off with the lighting of Canberra’s Giant Christmas Tree,” Mr Stanhope said.

“From 7pm crowds filling Civic Square for the lighting of the Canberra Christmas tree will be entertained by ABC TV ‘Play School’ favourite and popular children’s performer Justine Clarke, A Bunch of Posers featuring Mrs Claus and her Angelic Chorus, and Santa Claus is also expected to make an appearance.

“Come nightfall, the crowd will witness Canberra’s spectacular 21m-high Christmas tree being lit.

“The ACT Government is able to provide this free family event with generous support from ActewAGL, Prime Television, Mix 106.3 and OutinCanberra.com.au.”

Mr Stanhope said that once again, event sponsor ActewAGL was ensuring that each of the lights illuminating the tree is powered by ActewAGL’s Green Choice program.

If you have little people it’s a pretty good night out.

UPDATE: On The Beast this morning Chief Minister Stanhope has announced the event has been cancelled because stuff is wet.

And it was dry enough it could have gone ahead.

There were a lot of families sitting around waiting for it all to start at 7pm – pity no one thought to put a sign up near the tree saying the event was cancelled!

Here here S-S-A!!!

Agree with you also Gospeedygo! — I too am sick to bloody death of how this drags on for so long.

Shopping centres have got a lot to answer for I mean a couple of weeks ago a checkout chick had the nerve not only to put on her Santa hat in front of my eyes, but to also blindly say “I love Christmas” like it was only November 11 for God sake!!! My bet is she is just another zombie of the commercial Christmas movement.

(not defending the religious aspect either — it’s a Christian festival, and I for one am not a Christian!!)

Sure, it’s exciting for the little ones, but you have to ask why? What makes the little ones excited about Christmas in the first place? They are getting their Christmas bedtime stories from somewhere! Kids don’t just get excited about Christmas just for the hell of it, it’s coming somewhere!! and that is where the buck stops, with where the Christmas hype hype hype is originating.

So are you the Grinch?

There is a silver lining though, if you were after a white van to hire over the December/Xmas period, there are now a couple more available.

funny, the last time I looked at the ACT events site it had a notice that it would go ahead even if it rained, guess they changed their minds 🙂

He better cancel the ads on the radio then. Just heard one at about 1130am inviting everyone to come and have fun!

Well thats just typical of Stanhope.
Can’t run the schools properly, Can’t run the hospitals properly and now he’s cancelled Christmas.

Cancelled? *sadface*

ominous news that you’ll no longer be able to pretend Christmas isn’t coming … on 3 December

The Chief Minister obviously hasn’t been to Woden Plaza lately… still 36 sleeps to go but we’re now being treated to carols muzak and frigging Santa is greeting the kiddies.

Christmas would seem somewhat more special it was once a year, not a whopping 10% of it.

Ugh, please go away. I’m sick of Christmas already.

Midgets and dwarves will enjoy the opening?

What about amputees? They can be quite little, sometimes.
